Friday, August 24 - Natalie Palms

Natalie Mae Palms is a Manchester, MI native now living in New Orleans.  Natalie is a singer/songwriter who has honed her many musical talents into a new and unique blend of folk/roots music.  Her parents, music teachers and folk musicians themselves, instilled in her the passion and love for music at a young age, encouraging her to learn multiple instruments and to take the songwriting craft seriously.  Since moving to Louisiana, Natalie has taken her songwriting to another level, using her talents with all her instruments, including the ukulele, to express her stories of desired love, dying love, and forgotten love.  Her experience from listening to and observing her parents' traditional folk band (The Raisin Pickers) can be heard in her use of traditional story lines and simple melodies. Her voice carries each melody with power and ease, while her lyrics prove to be crafted with great care.  She currently tours throughout the Southeast and Midwest as lead vocalist and keyboard player/fiddler with popular NOLA indie-rock band The Blue Party, as well as playing with her own band, Natalie Mae and Her Unturned Tricks.  Natalie will be performing a solo acoustic show for this return to Crazy Wisdom.  www.nataliemaemusic.com

A Mission from God: A Memoir and Challenge for America
(Hardcover)
By James Meredith, William Doyle
List Price: $25.00
Our Price: $17.50
(Save: $7.50 30%)

"I am not a civil rights hero. I am a warrior, and I am on a mission from God." -James Meredith

James Meredith engineered two of the most epic events of the American civil rights era: the desegregation of the University of Mississippi in 1962, which helped open the doors of education to all Americans; and the March Against Fear in 1966, which helped open the floodgates of voter registration in the South.
Part memoir, part manifesto, A Mission from God is James Meredith's look back at his courageous and action-packed life and his challenge to America to address the most critical issue of our day: how to educate and uplift the millions of black and white Americans who remain locked in the chains of poverty by improving our public education system.
Born on a small farm in Mississippi, Meredith returned home in 1960 after nine years in the U.S. Air Force, with a master plan to shatter the system of state terror and white supremacy in America. He waged a fourteen-month legal campaign to force the state of Mississippi to honor his rights as an American citizen and admit him to the University of Mississippi. He fought the case all the way to the Supreme Court and won. Meredith endured months of death threats, daily verbal abuse, and round-the-clock protection from federal marshals and thousands of troops to became the first black graduate of the University of Mississippi in 1963.
In 1966 he was shot by a sniper on the second day of his "Walk Against Fear" to inspire voter registration in Mississippi. Though Meredith never allied with traditional civil rights groups, leaders of civil rights organizations flocked to help him complete the march, one of the last great marches of the civil rights era. Decades later, Meredith says, "Now it is time for our next great mission from God. . . . You and I have a divine responsibility to transform America."

Dreamland: Adventures in the Strange Science of Sleep
(Hardcover)
By David K. Randall
List Price: $25.95
Our Price: $18.17
(Save: $7.79 30%)

An engrossing examination of the science behind the little-known world of sleep.
Like many of us, journalist David K. Randall never gave sleep much thought. That is, until he began sleepwalking. One midnight crash into a hallway wall sent him on an investigation into the strange science of sleep.
In Dreamland, Randall explores the research that is investigating those dark hours that make up nearly a third of our lives. Taking readers from military battlefields to children's bedrooms, Dreamland shows that sleep isn't as simple as it seems. Why did the results of one sleep study change the bookmakers' odds for certain Monday Night Football games? Do women sleep differently than men? And if you happen to kill someone while you are sleepwalking, does that count as murder?
This book is a tour of the often odd, sometimes disturbing, and always fascinating things that go on in the peculiar world of sleep. You'll never look at your pillow the same way again.

The Rocks Don't Lie: A Geologist Investigates Noah's Flood
(Hardcover)
By David R. Montgomery
List Price: $26.95
Our Price: $18.87
(Save: $8.09 30%)

How the mystery of the Bible's greatest story shaped geology: a MacArthur Fellow presents a surprising perspective on Noah's Flood.
In Tibet, geologist David R. Montgomery heard a local story about a great flood that bore a striking similarity to Noah's Flood. Intrigued, Montgomery began investigating the world's flood stories and-drawing from historic works by theologians, natural philosophers, and scientists-discovered the counterintuitive role Noah's Flood played in the development of both geology and creationism. Steno, the grandfather of geology, even invoked the Flood in laying geology's founding principles based on his observations of northern Italian landscapes. Centuries later, the founders of modern creationism based their irrational view of a global flood on a perceptive critique of geology. With an explorer's eye and a refreshing approach to both faith and science, Montgomery takes readers on a journey across landscapes and cultures. In the process we discover the illusive nature of truth, whether viewed through the lens of science or religion, and how it changed through history and continues changing, even today. 20 illustrations; maps

You Are Your Child's First Teacher, Third Edition: Encouraging Your Child's Natural Development from Birth to Age Six
(Paperback)
By Rahima Baldwin Dancy
List Price: $17.99
Our Price: $12.59
(Save: $5.40 30%)

You Are Your Child's First Teacher was the first book in America to popularize the insights of Rudolf Steiner, founder of the Waldorf schools, regarding the developmental needs of young children. This revised and updated edition offers new ways for parents and educators to enrich the lives of children from birth to age six.
Some of the most important learning years happen before your child reaches school. In You Are Your Child's First Teacher, respected Waldorf educator Rahima Baldwin Dancy explains the different stages of learning that children go through from birth to age six, giving you the wisdom and understanding to enrich your child's natural development in the right way at the right time. Today's society often pressures us into overstimulating young children with flashcards, workbooks, videos, and electronic gadgets in a well-meaning attempt to give them a head start. But children are not little adults-they learn and grow in radically different ways at different ages, and what we do to help could actually hurt instead.
A trusted classic for over twenty years, this newly revised edition contains updated resources and additional information on discipline, early childhood programs, toilet training, using home life as curriculum, and more. From language and cognitive develop-ment to appropriate toys and nourishing your child's artistic abilities, Dancy speaks up for a rational approach to child-rearing, one that helps children be children while we fulfill our important role as parents and first teachers.
