Crazy Wisdom Salons -
Kids Pick Up on EVERYTHING
Thursday, Apr 26
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Free to Attend

We fool ourselves if we think our children don't pick up on our stress. David Code, author of the book, Kids Pick Up on EVERYTHING, says, "Stressed parents create stressed children."  His research and that of others is beginning to show that parental stress is the real toxin affecting children's health. Children can "catch" their parents' stress just like they catch a virus. When stress pervades a household, a child's nervous system can reach "overload." Code explains the medical research showing how parental stress is a major risk factor in today's epidemic of child health problems.

Code contends that the damage created by parental stress can be reversed. Research suggests that, when parents relax more, children begin to learn better and show less anger or fear and have fewer physical and emotional problems. Code appeals to parents to relax and socialize more!  He is convinced from his research that healthy relationships are the best gift we can give our children.

Carole Kirby, LMSW will facilitative a panel of Ann Arbor parents who will share their experience in attempting to minimize stress and the challenges therein.

Panel facilitator: Carole Kirby -- Carole is an Imago therapist and workshop presenter who specializes in working with couples. She herself grew up in stressed-filled family and knows from  her first-hand experience as well as from working with couples and families how stress impacts a family.

Theresa Bassett and her partner, Carol Kennedy, are parents of six children ranging in ages from 6 to 20. Their family came to be through a combination of both adoption and birth. Both Carol and Theresa are involved in education, both as teachers and currently as students at EMU.

Marcie Greenfield is a 55-year-old mother of 8-year-old twin girls, as well as 4 adult stepsons. She is a part-time business manager of a non-profit, marketing research consultant and the owner/operator of a touring and tasting company in Ann Arbor, where she lives with the girls and her husband, Jim, a software engineer. She loves cooking, walking and dancing. She strives to raise happy, confident, kind girls by parenting with lots of hugs, patience and flexibility.

Stefanie Cohen is a multidisciplinary performing artist and movement educator who teaches and performs throughout the country. She serves as an arts-infused Teaching Artist working with pre-school through second grade students in Detroit, and is the owner and manager of SOMA: Studio of Movement Arts, in Ann Arbor. Together, along with her former partner, she co-parents her twelve-year old son and eight-year old daughter

George Hoffmann, 52, teaches Renaissance French literature, cinema, and creative writing in French at the University of Michigan. He co-parents his two children, a son 12 years old and a daughter 8 years old with his former partner. His loves (besides his children) include judo, music, wine, hiking and writing... and cooking dinners for friends

Open to all -- parents, grandparents, & all folks who care about children.

Last Call at the Oasis: The Global Water Crisis and Where We Go from Here
(Paperback)
By Participant Media
List Price: $15.99
Our Price: $14.39
(Save: $1.60 10%)

Water scarcity is poised to become the most explosive issue of our time. Global population is soaring toward the 10 billion mark. Climate change is producing unprecedented droughts as well as devastating flooding. Less than 1 percent of the world's water is fresh and potable-and no more will ever be available.
We can't afford to continue our profligate ways with water. Yet forging reasonable compromises over water regulation is incredibly difficult, as raging controversies and conflicts over water supplies in the American Southwest and "fracking" in the Northeast suggest. "Water wars" may soon threaten the peace in regions from the India/Pakistan border to sub-Saharan Africa to the Middle East.
Based on the forthcoming film by Academy Award-winning director Jessica Yu, Last Call at the Oasis explains the facts behind these interlinked crises and describes the work that far-seeing reformers, policy-makers, scientists, engineers, and business leaders are doing to craft solutions.

The Interfaith Alternative: Embracing Spiritual Diversity
(Paperback)
By Steven Greenebaum
List Price: $14.95
Our Price: $13.46
(Save: $1.50 10%)

Whatever your spiritual path, chances are that the primary tenets of your faith include universal love, acceptance, and compassion. Yet three thousand years after Moses, twenty-five hundred years after the Buddha, two thousand years after Jesus, and fifteen hundred years after Muhammad, we are still divided by our differences. Religious intolerance, discrimination, even persecution and violence make up the not-so-golden rule.
The Interfaith Alternative shows us how we can celebrate each other without fear of losing our own identity. It illuminates the path to creating a nurturing spiritual community that honors and includes all religious languages-an alternative to Jews worshiping only with Jews, Christians with Christians, and Muslims with Muslims. In doing so, it demonstrates that through coming together in a mutually supportive environment we can concentrate on our shared desire to remake the world into a compassionate, loving place.
At its core, Interfaith is about community and justice. Once we truly embrace diversity, we embrace our common humanity. A powerful antidote to the current climate of fear and mistrust, The Interfaith Alternative argues that it is not how we encounter the sacred, but what we do about it that counts-there are positive alternatives to religious lines in the sand.
