Friday, April 13 - Nicholas James Thomasma
Singer-songwriter Nicholas James Thomasma is a Grand Rapids native and a Michigander to the core. He even has the Great Lakes State tattooed on his arm! Nic professes real love for the region in earthy, country-imbued songs drenched in honesty and authenticity. Kind, approachable, thoughtful and passionate, he is the embodiment of that socially conscience songwriter with a guitar strapped to his back. He also performs with his band, Nicholas James and the Bandwagon, although he will be doing a solo acoustic show for Crazy Wisdom. www.NicholasJamesThomasma.com
Saturday, April 14 - Tom Kastle
Tom Kastle is a singer, songwriter, sailor, and teller of tales based in the Great Lakes, who has traveled the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and the Pacific. With one foot in the singer/songwriter world and the other foot firmly planted in the traditional maritime realm, Tom brings a sense of "writing out of the tradition" to his music that is evident in his recordings and performances. He toured as half of Tom & Chris Kastle for two decades, producing a dozen recordings and a soundtrack for PBS (WTTW-TV Chicago). Recently, Tom has appeared at folk venues throughout the Midwest, Northeast, and around the Chesapeake Bay as well as sea music festivals in Duluth, Chicago, Halifax and Mystic Seaport. Tom was heard on folk and community radio and was honored to be a guest host for Rich Warren's Sweet Folk Chicago show on WFMT. There is a strong sense of "story" in all his work; both spoken and sung. Tom recently narrated his third production for the Candid Concert Opera Company (with a small singing role). When not sailing, he lives in a 19th-century log cottage on the shore of one of the many lakes in Madison, WI. www.tomkastle.com

A pioneering work of environmental journalism that vividly depicts the people, animals and landscapes on the front lines of change's inexorable march. A species nearing extinction, a tribe losing centuries of knowledge, a tract of forest facing the first incursion of humans-how can we even begin to assess the cost of losing so much of our natural and cultural legacy? For forty years, environmental journalist and author Eugene Linden has traveled to the very sites where tradition, wildlands and the various forces of modernity collide. In The Ragged Edge of the World, he takes us from pygmy forests to the Antarctic to the world's most pristine rainforest in the Congo to tell the story of the harm taking place-and the successful preservation efforts-in the world's last wild places.
Hot Cripple: An Incurable Smart-ass Takes on the Health Care System and Lives to Tell the Tale (Paperback) By Hogan Gorman List Price: $16.00 Our Price: $11.20 (Save: $4.80 30%)
From Prada to poverty-one woman's harrowing and hilarious journey Ex-model Hogan Gorman was living the typical New York working actor's life-auditions and classes by day, waitressing and fending off handsy customers by night-when a wise (or just crazy) friend convinced her to ask the universe for a change. And she got one-coming at her at forty miles per hour. Hit by a car and suffering debilitating injuries, and with no health insurance, the fashionista attempts to bounce back into her (thrift store-purchased) Jimmy Choos even as she deals with short-term memory loss, stalker ambulance drivers, trying to stay vegan on food stamps, crazy judges, hot doctors, and unsympathetic government workers. Inspired by her acclaimed one-woman show, this is a bitingly funny and keenly observed account of the cracks in our medical and social welfare system and how one woman's resilience combined with a generous dollop of humor helped her fight her way to recovery.
