Friday, February 24 - Billy Brandt
Having spent decades in the music business supporting other bands and artists, Billy Brandt found his own musical voice and steps into the spotlight as a singer-songwriter. Influenced by the likes of Gram Parsons to Neil Young, he's molded his sound by creating his own unique guitar picking, creating a haunting melody which stays with the listener long after the song is over. His deep roots in alt-country have earned him a loyal following.  You may have seen Billy with his band Grievous Angel, as part of the duo Billy and Sarana, as a partner/sidemen for Jill Jack, and/or with any number of other outstanding musicians/singers/songwriters.  Billy has been voted as Outstanding Acoustic Vocalist and Outstanding Folk Artist - Detroit Music Awards, among many other honors. www.drumdancerrecords.com
It's quite likely that Billy will bring along one or two special guests, so don't miss this rare Ann Arbor solo appearance!

Saturday, February 25 -
Jo Serrapere & Johnny Devine

Whether recreating old songs from the Mississippi Delta or performing songs in her own confessional style, Detroit native Jo Serrapere's music stands as original, while always reflecting her love of American roots music. Her eclectic writing and performance fuses elements of various modern and traditional folk music, old-time and electric blues styles, roots rock, garage surf, swing, hot jazz and alt-country. Jo's band, the Willie Dunns (John Devine, Jef Reynolds and Stuart Tucker) brings added depth and musical styling to Jo's original songs as well as classics from such artists as Mississippi John Hurt, Bessie Smith and Tom Waits.
John Devine, also a Detroit native, attended Master's classes in classical guitar at Miami University. He went on to explore traditional blues styles and develop a love for the "race records" of the 1920's and 30's. John performed as a solo blues artist and songwriter before teaming up with Jo in 1998. He continues to explore other forms of American roots music and teach his craft. www.joserrapere.com.

Holding Our World Together: Ojibwe Women and the Survival of the Community
(Hardcover)
By Brenda J. Child, Colin Calloway
List Price: $22.95
Our Price: $16.07
(Save: $6.89 30%)

A groundbreaking exploration of the remarkable women in Native American communities.
Too often ignored or underemphasized in favor of their male warrior counterparts, Native American women have played a more central role in guiding their nations than has ever been understood. Many Native communities were, in fact, organized around women's labor, the sanctity of mothers, and the wisdom of female elders. In this well-researched and deeply felt account of the Ojibwe of Lake Superior and the Mississippi River, Brenda J. Child details the ways in which women have shaped Native American life from the days of early trade with Europeans through the reservation era and beyond.
The latest volume in the Penguin Library of American Indian History, Holding Our World Together illuminates the lives of women such as Madeleine Cadotte, who became a powerful mediator between her people and European fur traders, and Gertrude Buckanaga, whose postwar community activism in Minneapolis helped bring many Indian families out of poverty. Drawing on these stories and others, Child offers a powerful tribute to the many courageous women who sustained Native communities through the darkest challenges of the last three centuries.

Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture
(Paperback)
By Peggy Orenstein
List Price: $14.99
Our Price: $10.49
(Save: $4.50 30%)

The acclaimed author of the groundbreaking bestseller Schoolgirls reveals the dark side of pink and pretty: the rise of the girlie-girl, she warns, is not that innocent.
Pink and pretty or predatory and hardened, sexualized girlhood influences our daughters from infancy onward, telling them that how a girl looks matters more than who she is. Somewhere between the exhilarating rise of Girl Power in the 1990s and today, the pursuit of physical perfection has been recast as a source-the source-of female empowerment. And commercialization has spread the message faster and farther, reaching girls at ever-younger ages.
But, realistically, how many times can you say no when your daughter begs for a pint-size wedding gown or the latest Hannah Montana CD? And how dangerous is pink and pretty anyway-especially given girls' successes in the classroom and on the playing field? Being a princess is just make-believe, after all; eventually they grow out of it. Or do they? Does playing Cinderella shield girls from early sexualization-or prime them for it? Could today's little princess become tomorrow's sexting teen? And what if she does? Would that make her in charge of her sexuality-or an unwitting captive to it?
Those questions hit home with Peggy Orenstein, so she went sleuthing. She visited Disneyland and the international toy fair, trolled American Girl Place and Pottery Barn Kids, and met beauty pageant parents with preschoolers tricked out like Vegas showgirls. She dissected the science, created an online avatar, and parsed the original fairy tales. The stakes turn out to be higher than she-or we-ever imagined: nothing less than the health, development, and futures of our girls. From premature sexualization to the risk of depression to rising rates of narcissism, the potential negative impact of this new girlie-girl culture is undeniable-yet armed with awareness and recognition, parents can effectively counterbalance its influence in their daughters' lives.
Cinderella Ate My Daughter is a must-read for anyone who cares about girls, and for parents helping their daughters navigate the rocky road to adulthood.

"Enough with speculation about our digital future. Infinite Reality is the straight dope on what is and isn't happening to us right now, from two of the only scientists working on the boundaries between real life and its virtual extensions."
-Douglas Rushkoff, author of Program or Be Programmed

How achievable are the virtual experiences seen in The Matrix, Tron, and James Cameron's Avatar? Do our brains know where "reality" ends and "virtual" begins? In Infinite Reality, Jim Blascovich and Jeremy Bailenson, two pioneering experts in the field of virtual reality, reveal how the human brain behaves in virtual environments and examine where radical new developments in digital technology will lead us in five, fifty, and five hundred years.
