Siusan O'Rourke & Zig Zeitler

- Siusan O'Rourke and Zig Zeitler are one of mid-Michigan's most versatile couples: performers, singers, songsmiths, multi-instrumentalists, cancer activists, purveyors of roots Americana and proprietors of the White Crow Conservatory, one of the state's premier folk venues. Siusan is the daughter of a first-generation Irish family from Brooklyn New York, one of countless American blossoms from a rich, ancient culture. Whether it's one of her originals or a song from deep in the tradition in Gaelic or English, Siusan O'Rourke's dark alto voice is as enveloping as the Irish mist, and as warm as a peat fire.  A seasoned and versatile musician, Zig Zeitler brings long experience playing every kind of American roots music to the duo's repertoire, particularly his instrumental skills on guitar, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, and especially the Irish bouzouki---one of his fully 18 CDs is devoted to that latter-day Celtic instrument.
Together Zig and Siusan bring years of craft and performing savvy to the stage, 21st-century artists embodying the best that Irish seeds have produced from American soil.  Not to be contained in any stylistic cage, though, Zeitler and O"Rourke can easily fill an evening, a workshop or a weekend with a full palette of blues, folk, old-time country and---especially---their finely-wrought original songs.

Saturday, January 28 -

Black Hat

- Black Hat presents modern, original poetry set to music with ruthless tenderness. Frankie the K and Caroline Maun are singer-songwriters who create a jazz, pop, and folk fusion that will make you feel honest emotion. Jim Hart is the drummer and percussionist who ties it all together.  Between the performance and the sound lies the story. . .

Solving the Communion Enigma: What Is To Come
(Hardcover)
By Whitley Strieber
List Price: $25.95
Our Price: $18.17
(Save: $7.79 30%)

The bestselling author probes the ultimate significance behind today's increasing reports of UFOs, alien abductions, crop circles, and other unexplained phenomena-and what they mean for humanity's immediate future.
In 1987 writer Whitley Strieber exposed the world to the truth about alien abduction in his landmark memoir, Communion. For the first time in years, Strieber revisits his encounter with alien intelligences-but now dramatically widens his search to explore how "the visitors" connect with today's persistent and globe-spanning reports of anomalous phenomena, such as crop circles, cattle mutilations, UFO sightings, alien abductions, near-death experiences, close encounters, and unexplained bodily implants.
In his magisterial style, Strieber contextualizes these bizarre and unsettling reports with his own childhood memories of strange schools, sinister experiments, and family secrets. In exploring today's most convincing cases of unexplained phenomena, Strieber reasons that they are not unrelated events. Nor are they the result of mass delusion. In some of his most persuasive writing, Strieber argues that the wave of mysterious episodes marks a transition that humanity is undergoing right now. Against all conscious understanding, we are experiencing a broadened awareness of dimensions of reality that exist beyond our current perceptions.

Haitian Vodou: An Introduction to Haiti's Indigenous Spiritual Tradition
(Paperback)
By Mambo Chita Tann
List Price: $15.95
Our Price: $11.17
(Save: $4.79 30%)

Deeply rooted in Haiti's culture and held sacred by millions, Haitian Vodou is a joyous and profound ancestral practice descended from the Vodu priesthood of West Africa. This little-understood belief system is among the truest religions of the Americas--yet its essence has remained a mystery to outsiders.
Written by a practitioner of the highest initiatory rank, Haitian Vodou is the only book that offers a respectful, first-hand overview of the centuries-old indigenous tradition. From Haiti's culture and history to the sacred beliefs, ceremonies, rituals, and practices grounded in ancestral communion, readers will get a rare look inside Haitian Vodou. Also explored: its relationship to other African diasporic traditions in the West; common misconceptions; Vodou magic and initiations; how millions survived slavery, betrayal, and revolution; and the twentyone nations of the Lwa, the spirits of Haitian Vodou.

Distrust That Particular Flavor
(Hardcover)
By William Gibson
List Price: $26.95
Our Price: $18.87
(Save: $8.09 30%)

William Gibson is known primarily as a novelist, with his work ranging from his groundbreaking first novel, Neuromancer, to his more recent contemporary bestsellers Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, and Zero History. During those nearly thirty years, though, Gibson has been sought out by widely varying publications for his insights into contemporary culture. Wired magazine sent him to Singapore to report on one of the world's most buttoned-up states. The New York Times Magazine asked him to describe what was wrong with the Internet. Rolling Stone published his essay on the ways our lives are all "soundtracked" by the music and the culture around us. And in a speech at the 2010 Book Expo, he memorably described the interactive relationship between writer and reader.
These essays and articles have never been collected-until now. Some have never appeared in print at all. In addition, Distrust That Particular Flavor includes journalism from small publishers, online sources, and magazines no longer in existence. This volume will be essential reading for any lover of William Gibson's novels. Distrust That Particular Flavor offers readers a privileged view into the mind of a writer whose thinking has shaped not only a generation of writers but our entire culture.

Man Seeks God: My Flirtations with the Divine
(Hardcover)
By Eric Weiner
List Price: $26.99
Our Price: $18.89
(Save: $8.10 30%)

When a health scare puts him in the hospital, Eric Weiner-an agnostic by default-finds himself tangling with an unexpected question, posed to him by a well-meaning nurse. "Have you found your God yet?" The thought of it nags him, and prods him-and ultimately launches him on a far-flung journey to do just that.
Weiner, a longtime "spiritual voyeur" and inveterate traveler, realizes that while he has been privy to a wide range of religious practices, he's never seriously considered these concepts in his own life. Face to face with his own mortality, and spurred on by the question of what spiritual principles to impart to his young daughter, he decides to correct this omission, undertaking a worldwide exploration of religions and hoping to come, if he can, to a personal understanding of the divine.
The journey that results is rich in insight, humor, and heart. Willing to do anything to better understand faith, and to find the god or gods that speak to him, he travels to Nepal, where he meditates with Tibetan lamas and a guy named Wayne. He sojourns to Turkey, where he whirls (not so well, as it turns out) with Sufi dervishes. He heads to China, where he attempts to unblock his chi; to Israel, where he studies Kabbalah, sans Madonna; and to Las Vegas, where he has a close encounter with Raelians (followers of the world's largest UFO-based religion).
At each stop along the way, Weiner tackles our most pressing spiritual questions: Where do we come from? What happens when we die? How should we live our lives? Where do all the missing socks go? With his trademark wit and warmth, he leaves no stone unturned. At a time when more Americans than ever are choosing a new faith, and when spiritual questions loom large in the modern age, MAN SEEKS GOD presents a perspective on religion that is sure to delight, inspire, and entertain.
