FOLK IT! kicks off 12th season at Crazy Wisdom Sept 11th. Live show returns to Main Street
Ann Arbor- The popular internet radio show, FOLK IT! on A3radio.com, starts its 12th season Sept 11 with the song writer and performer, Judy Insley. This season will be broadcast live from The Crazy Wisdom Bookstore and Tea Room in Ann Arbor on Sunday evenings. The move to Crazy Wisdom marks the return to Main Street for the show which for many years came from Main and Liberty, site of the studio until its move to Ypsilanti. The format of interviews and music remains the same, with the studio audience in close contact with the artists. "We love the fact that the artists are right in front of the listeners and that we try to ask the questions that the listeners want to know," said Tom Saunders, long time host and producer of Folk It!. "The show has one artist per week because we want to know the whole body of work, not just a few CD cuts." The show this year will be video streamed live in addition to the more traditional radio approach used in past years. "Having a face for radio, this might be a mistake," quipped Saunders. The shows will air weekly air on a3radio.com on the Internet and will rotate between Folk It! and All That Jazz, hosted by Ray Taylor and Peter Brown. Community HU Chant with Local Members of Eckankar · Fridays, 6:30-7:15 p.m. · All faiths (and agnostics!) are welcome to join this weekly, free get-together to sing one of the ancient names for God - HU. Popular in many cultures, the singing of HU is an undirected prayer to harmonize the consciousness with and open the heart to God's love. Free. My Teenage Werewolf: A Mother, a Daughter, a Journey Through the Thicket of Adolescence by Lauren Kessler "Straight from the trenches, a mom's tale of weathering her daughter's transformation from sweetheart to snark mouth." - People With the eye of a reporter, the curiosity of an anthropologist, and the open-and sometimes wounded-heart of a mother, award-winning author Lauren Kessler launches an eighteen-month mission, embedding herself in her about-to-be-teenage daughter Lizzie's life. Everywhere from middle school classrooms to the mall, from summer camp to online chat groups, Kessler observes and chronicles-and sometimes participates in-the vibrant, dynamic, and scary life of a twenty-first-century teen.
Penguin Group (USA) - 9780143119456 - $15.00/with coupon only $10.50 Harnessed: How Language and Music Mimicked Nature and Transformed Ape to Man by Mark Changizi The scientific consensus is that our ability to understand human speech has evolved over hundreds of thousands of years. After all, there are whole portions of the brain devoted to human speech. We learn to understand speech before we can even walk, and can seamlessly absorb enormous amounts of information simply by hearing it. Surely we evolved this capability over thousands of generations. Or did we? Portions of the human brain are also devoted to reading. Children learn to read at a very young age and can seamlessly absorb information even more quickly through reading than through hearing. We know that we didn't evolve to read because reading is only a few thousand years old. In "Harnessed," cognitive scientist Mark Changizi demonstrates that human speech has been very specifically "designed" to harness the sounds of nature, sounds we've evolved over millions of years to readily understand. Long before humans evolved, mammals have learned to interpret the sounds of nature to understand both threats and opportunities. Our speech-regardless of language-is very clearly based on the sounds of nature. Even more fascinating, Changizi shows that music itself is based on natural sounds. Music-seemingly one of the most human of inventions-is literally built on sounds and patterns of sound that have existed since the beginning of time.
BenBella Books, Inc. - 9781935618539 - $16.95/with coupon only $11.87 The Source Field Investigations: The Hidden Science and Lost Civilizations behind the 2012 Prophecies by David Wilcock Based on a hugely popular Internet documentary, this exploration of historic signs and symbolism determines what the future holds for humanity come 2012. "If you believe there is no special significance to the year 2012, then prepare yourself for a guided tour through the most incredible scientific mysteries in the modern world, which may be the rediscovery of an ancient system of physics and spirituality that was once widely used and understood, but has since crumbled almost completely into ruin." -The Source Field Investigations In his documentary The 2012 Enigma-viewed more than two million times- David Wilcock exposed many great secrets: DNA, consciousness science, wormholes, stargate travel, sacred geometry, three-dimensional time, the Mayan calendar, and much more. And in this book, his seminal work, he'll expose even more. Calling upon fascinating areas of alternative science, Wilcock's unique philosophy connects the human species and the rest of the cosmos, proposing that it is in our power to usher in the Golden Age prophesied in so many ancient cultures and spiritual traditions. Unlike the doom- and-gloom viewpoints depicted in big-budget disaster films, Wilcock believes that 2012 may be a watermark for when a widespread acceptance of a greater reality will begin to occur-and in his book, he lays out many of the blueprints for such a Golden Age.
