Gold Rush Apple

     Let the GOLD RUSH begin!

These juicy, tart, sweet and firm apples are finally in and they are worth the wait!

Hello Market Shoppers!

The weather may not be great on Saturday, but don't let that stop you from coming on down to the market.  We'll be dry under the bridge and you can warm up with hot coffee, hot cider or hot chocolate from Artisans.

There are many reasons not to miss this market, but here are a few of them:

Gold Rush Apples!
Yes, they have finally arrived at North Star Orchard

Salmon!
Wild For Salmon is making a special visit to the market this week with all of their delicious salmon products.

Salami and Copa!
From Country Time Farm, perfect with some local bread, cheese and wine on a cool fall night.

Thanksgiving Raffle! Beginning this week, you can enter to win our Thanksgiving Raffle which will include a free pasture raised turkey from Mountain View Farm as well as a basket of other essential holiday goodies.  You can enter once each week until our drawing at the close of the market on November 12th.

And here is another reason to come on down to the market on Saturday.  I just got a Wegmans holiday magazine in the mail and decided to take a look.  In many of the recipes, ingredients were listed like "Food You Feel Good About  Cleaned and Cut Butternut Squash"...which got me to thinking.  I realized that that's what our market is a market where all of the food is food that I feel good about.  The farmers and artisans produce high quality, healthful products with great care for the land, the animals and the people who work with them.    I hope you will come on down to the market this week to celebrate our very own LOCAL FOOD WE CAN ALL FEEL GOOD ABOUT!

See you at the Market!

North Star Orchard:

It's Halloweeny Time! Time for all of our favorites: candy, pumpkins, colorful leaves, homemade soup, and of course....Gold Rush apples!

We'll continue to have a great selection of awesome apples and Asian pears (Hosui, Yoinashi, Olympic) at the market.  Come out and try: Stellar, the few remaining Golden Russet, Reinette Simerenko, Winecrisp, Enterprise and more! (as well as the first taste of Gold Rush for the year, of course!)

Did someone say Gold Rush??

It's time for you to stake your claim in this year's Gold Rush Rush!

Gold Rush are the last apples of the year, and are fantastic keepers. They are sugary-tart, and get sweeter as they're stored in the 'fridge. They are fantastic for fresh eating, and make prize-winning pies and delicious applesauce. We also use them to make a wicked-good varietal cider, which some claim is "nectar of the gods".

Gold Rush apples will be available for purchase by the pound at the farmers' market. Pre-ordering a big bag of them for pick up in November will save you a few dollars and help stave off your need to resort to grocery store apples.

20 lb. bags of Gold Rush apples will be available for pickup over the middle two weeks of November, and Gold Rush varietal cider will be available ONE WEEK ONLY (November 7th-13th). You must pre-order both of these items.

For more info about Gold Rush, and to order, look at our Gold Rush Rush webpage.

Check out our Gold Rush apple recipe in the recipe section.

Shellbark Hollow Farm:

This week Shellbark Hollow Farm with have their autumn inspired chevre spreads.  Harvest Moon- a mild pumpkin flavor with a touch of fall spices and Spectachio- cranberries with roasted pistachio nut- both whipped and creamy.  Great for anytime of day.  Stop by and try them.

Here's a great recipe for those Gold Rush. It's super-easy and only takes one bowl, one baking dish, and about 10 minutes of prep!  Courtesy of North Star Orchard

Cranberry-Apple Crisp
(for 9 X 13) pan

12 oz. Package of fresh cranberries (sort out any bad ones. You can get away with using just half a bag in this recipe)
5 to 6 large apples, unpeeled, cored and sliced
1/2 c. sugar
2 t. cinnamon
½ c. flour, divided
4 T. packed brown sugar
1 ½ c. rolled oats (regular or quick)
~1 c. chopped walnuts
~6 T. melted margarine

Preheat oven to 375

Combine cranberries, apples, sugar, cinnamon, and 2 T. of the flour. Put into a pan (greased if it's glass or not a 'coated' pan)

Mix remaining ingredients in the same bowl you used before, and then sprinkle them on top of the apple mixture

Bake at 375 for 40 min, or until browned
