Here are a few of the beautiful and functional creations that will be at the market this week!
Hello Market Shoppers!

It's the Second Saturday of the month and that means that we have artists and the Hytha Family Band this week for our monthly festival!  If that isn't enough of a reason to come down to the market, maybe APPLE CIDER is!  There is nothing as refreshing as a cold glass of apple cider that captures the essence of an apple- sweet, yet tart and crisp- yum!

There will be lots of fruit at the market this week and lots of vegetables too.  The Market is a great place to buy everything you need for a healthy lunchbox or after school snack.  Fresh-a-peel hummus has a few flavors that are slightly sweet, but also packed with protein and fiber.  Pair them with a fresh apple or artisan bread and you have a delicious and healthy snack.  And so many children at the market like local cheese, not to mention the adults.

If you haven't heard the Hytha family before, be prepared to be wowed!  They are Phoenixville locals and a Mother/Daughter, Father/Son team.  You can watch a video of them below.

Think SUN for Saturday and come on down, rain or shine!

See you at the Market!

Jenny & Franks Gourmet Gelato:

This week's flavors, as we stroll into the warm days of late-late summer include: the return of Ginger Peach (Pesche con Zanzero), Sunrise Espresso (Espress'Alba - did we mention that is a perfect September wake up?), Rustic Lemon (Limone Rustica), and our

ever-lovin' Chocolate Supreme (Cioccolatto Supremo). As always, contact us ahead and we'll hold your favorites for you - and $1 off a  "single" with your valid college ID. Come and impress us with your pronunciation!

North Star Orchard:

Say hello to cider season! Starting this weekend, we'll have a limited supply of both apple and Asian pear cider. Either of them are fantastic cold or heated up (with some spices thrown in). We'll also have some Hosui Asian pears and a nice selection of apples, including antique Adam's Pearmain. Veggie selection will include greens/lettuces, sweet peppers, and whatever is ripe and ready once we're finally able to swim our way into the garden! Pre-order homemade baked goods today for pickup next Saturday at the market! Look at the menu and order/pay here: http://northstarorchard.com/products_bakedgoodsatmarket.php

Here's a recipe using cider, if you'd like something to do with it other than just drinking it straight from the bottle. It's one that would be great for a warm early fall day!

Frosty Apple Shake

Combine in blender:

 1 pint vanilla ice cream

1 apple, cored, sliced, but not peeled

1 quart ice cold apple cider (ie. 1/2 bottle of North Star cider)

 ½ t. cinnamon

Whir until frothy; pour into tall glasses and sprinkle with nutmeg.

Pure Scents:

"Pure Scents will bring along a great selection of scents, including some Apple and Pumpkin scents to get you ready for Fall."

Shellbark Hollow Farm:

Stop by Shellbark Hollow and see what Pete has picked from his "reserve" stock to send to the market this week.  A creamy blue , his aged dry sharp, or a finely grated cheese for pasta and salads.

Stargazers Vineyard:

We are looking forward to coming back to the Market!! We will be offering four wines for tasting as well as all of our wines for sale. There are just a few bottles of Briar Patch and GV remaining.

Recipe

Here is a recipe that I filed away in 2008 but never included in the newsletter.  It uses so many ingredients that are at the market this week.

Roasted Pepper and Tomato Salad

By MARTHA ROSE SHULMAN

This is a truly seasonal salad, so make it soon, before the last fall tomatoes are gone. You'll find them at the farmers' markets - next to the tables full of peppers.

1 tablespoon sherry vinegar

1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

1 small garlic clove, minced

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Salt and freshly ground pepper

1 1/2 pounds red or red and yellow peppers, roasted

1 tablespoon slivered fresh basil

1 pound fresh ripe tomatoes, cut in wedges

1 head of leaf lettuce or romaine

2 ounces goat cheese, crumbled (optional)

1. To make the dressing, mix together the sherry vinegar, balsamic vinegar, garlic, and olive oil. Salt and pepper to taste.

2. Cut the roasted peppers into 1/2-inch wide strips. Toss with two tablespoons of the dressing. Add half the basil, and toss again.

3. Remove and discard the tough outer leaves from the lettuce. Wash and dry the tender leaves and tear into bite-size pieces. Toss with the tomatoes and remaining dressing and basil. Line a platter or a wide bowl with the lettuce and tomatoes. Top with the peppers. Sprinkle on the goat cheese, if using. Serve at room temperature or slightly chilled.

Yield: Serves four

Advance preparation: The roasted peppers will keep for about five days in the refrigerator, and for a week if you toss them with the dressing.
