Hello Market Shoppers,
Thank you to all that donated candy to the Operation Gratitude campaign, people were amazingly generous and we collected 40 lbs of candy in just a few hours!  On Friday night there is an opportunity to make a difference locally.  Artisan Cafe is holding their third annual Empty Bowls Dinner to benefit Phoenixville Area Community Services (PACS) Participants receive their choice of soup and bread served in a handcrafted bowl made by a local artist or ceramic student. They take home the bowl as a remembrance of the hunger that exists throughout the world.
This Saturday is Second Saturday and we have some very gifted local artists sharing their jewelery, pottery, fiber arts, and woodwork at the market.  This is a great opportunity for buying some beautiful, local, handmade gifts for the holidays.
Will we continue to give a Winter Market Dollar for every turkey order and this week will add apple cider to the list!  Also, if you can answer the trivia question at the end of the newsletter you can come to the information area for your chance to win more Winter Market Dollars!
Do you have any favorite Thanksgiving recipes to share?  We would love to have a collection of community favorites for next week's newsletter!  You can email your favorite recipe or drop it off at the market, thanks!

A recipe for Health

Of course, we have all been hearing about the flu, as it is rampant in our area.  At the market, we have many items that can help you boost your immune system through the season.  Several Studies show that raw honey had anti bacterial, anti fungal, and anti viral properties and a Penn State study showed that honey can actually improve respiratory conditions at bedtime in children over over the counter cough medicine (and possibly adults too)!  Honey is also easily absorbed in the digestive system so it doesn't interfere with digestion in the same way that other sugars do.  It is certainly one of natures miracles.

Another market remedy is the shiittake mushroom.  The shiitake has been used medicinally for thousands of years in Chinese Medicine.  It has been popularized over the past few decades as an immune booster.  I have heard many anecdotal accounts of the benefits of shiitakes and it only took me a minute to find a study linking small dosages of an active chemical in the shiitake to increased immune response to influenza.  I enjoy the process of linking food and medicine, stories and science, and I am sure we have many possiblilities to do so on Saturday at the market.  Real food really does a body good!
Aside from chicken soup, which we all could use a little of these days, we have another item at the market that you might not have tried before...
The juice of this Japanese plant acts as a decongestant, it's enzymes aid in the break down of mucus and phlegm.  It can be eaten in many ways, including in a tea with shiitake mushrooms.  Can you guess what it is?  Can you guess that I am leading you into a trivia contest?  If you can figure out the answer, let me know at the information area Saturday and I will enter you in a chance to win some Winter Market Dollars.

Looking Ahead

Next week is our last regular market of the season, but don't worry, we are not going away!  Our hours just get a little bit shorter leading up to the holidays.  Dirk Quinn Band welcomed us on our first day of the market this year and he will play for our last "official" day, too!
