What's New....

A message from Lori Policastro of Whole Hearted Bakery-
"I have some very sad news for market shoppers.  This week will be the last  for Whole Hearted Baking Company.  This is a bittersweet announcement.  I, Lori will be moving to Virginia to join my husband who has just been offered a job.  Sal starts immediately.   It is a blessing for Sal to have a job in this economy, particularly with so many people being laid off or asked to take pay cuts.  That is the sweet part.  The bitter part is leaving my company and all of you.  Baking for you has been the sweetest job on earth!  Please stop by and say goodbye.  It is my strong desire that someone will buy the company and carry on the mission of providing delicious baked goods made from the finest local ingredients available.   If you are interested let me know."   Lori

Mountain View
Poultry
is now taking orders for pasture raised Thanksgiving turkeys.

The Gold Rush Rush is on at North Star Orchard!  Stake your claim to a share of this year's harvest of amazing Gold Rush apples and varietal Gold Rush apple cider.  Gold Rush are sugary-tart, super-crisp, and make for amazing eating as well as prize-winning pies and sauce.  To top it all off, they keep well, too...up to several months in the fridge.  Gold Rush varietal cider is great to freeze to have on hand for the holidays and during the winter, and it makes fantastic homebrewed hard cider, for those so inclined to do so... but it's available one week only by pre-order. Learn more about The Gold Rush Rush and stake your claim online at:  Gold Rush

Hello Market Shoppers,

November marks the time when our nation stops to give thanks for the bounty of the harvest.  It is also a time when we reflect on the heritage of our nation and the debt we owe to Native Americans.  This week, we will have our own Native American Celebration, complete with storytelling and music performed by award winning Spirit Wing, children's activities, and information about the Lenape Nation.   It should be a fun and informative day at the Market!

This week, we will be introducing our Winter Market Dollars Giveaway as a way to celebrate a local Thanksgiving while saving money.  In the remaining three weeks of the regular market season, we will feature different Thanksgiving items that will earn you a  Winter Market Dollar with purchase.  These Winter Market Dollars can be used from November 28th through April. This week's item is central to Thanksgiving: a local, pasture-raised turkey from Mountainview Poultry Farm.  If you order a turkey, you will earn a market dollar.  If you have already ordered  your turkey stop by their stand to pick up your coupon.

Also, we are going to be collecting Halloween candy to donate to Operation Gratitude, an organization that sends care packages to soldiers abroad.  So, if you haven't eaten all of your kids candy yet and would like to make a donation, we will exchange 1 lb or more for a Winter Market Dollar!  We have a limited number of Winter Market Dollars, so this is a while supplies last offer.

This will be the last week that Whole Hearted Bakery will be at the market, please read the message from Lori on the left side of the newsletter.  We wish Lori the best in her new home in Virginia.

Also, of note, it is time to order Gold Rush Apples from North Star.  Gold Rush apples store very well during the winter and they are only going to be available by preorder and picked up on Nov 14th and Nov 21st.

Three Sisters Stew

1 cup of dried Christmas lima beans (or black beans, kidney, pinto, or Swedish brown beans), soaked
3 cups of water
2 cloves of garlic
2 Tbs fresh or 2 tsp dry oregano
1 tsp cumin seed
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 Tbs olive oil
1 medium onion
1 1/2 tsp sea salt
2-3 cloves garlic
2-3 cups of winter squash
1 14 oz can of chopped tomatoes
1 tbs chili powder
1 1/2 cups of frozen corn

8-10 Tbs of grated cheese for garnish

Drain soaking water off beans.  Place beans, water, and garlic in a pot, bring to a boil.  Cover and simmer until beans are tender (50-60 minutes).
In a large pot, quickly dry toast oregano, cumin seeds, and cinnamon for about 30 seconds.  Add oil, onion, salt, and minced garlic; saute onion until soft (about 20 minutes).  Add a litter water if mixture is dry.
Add cooked beans and corn to squash mixture; simmer until corn is tender.  Adjust seasoning to your taste.  Serve hot with grated cheese garnish.
