Hello Market Shoppers!
Yes,this week is the last of our regular season, and we will say goodbye to some of our regular farmers until next year. However, many of our producers will be coming to the special Holiday Markets which will be EVERY SATURDAY until Christmas, from 10am to noon. We will continue to send weekly emails to let you know who is coming and what they will bring.
Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday to celebrate local foods. We've compiled a selection of great recipes using ingredients that will be available at the market on Saturday. Lynn Hoagland will bring brussels sprouts, Charlestown Farm will have special herb bundles for roasting your turkey, Northstar and Quarryville Orchards will have apples, asian pears and fresh cider just to name a few items you won't want to miss for your holiday celebration. If you don't have time to bake for the holiday, our bakers will have great holiday pies, cookies and desserts. Many of you will probably be cooking a delicious turkey from Mountain View Farm. Take a look at the following link to watch an excellent video showing how to carve a turkey- it makes for a beautiful presentation and a mare relaxing time at the table: http://video.nytimes.com/video/2007/11/20/dining/1194817096866/the-butcher-carves-a-turkey.html
We're expecting L'il Red's Kettle Corn and Eclat Chocolate to be at the market tomorrow!
Music tomorrow will be by Chris Adams.

Thanksgiving Recipes
Braised Winter Squash & Potatoes
2 Tbs. butter 1 lb. winter squash, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks (about 1-1/2 cups) 1 lb. small red potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks 4 medium shallots, peeled and halved (can substitute local onions, minced) 2 tsp. minced fresh rosemary 1 tsp. coarse salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 Tbs. coarse-grained mustard, like Pommery 1 cup homemade or low-salt canned chicken broth
how to make
In
a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter, being careful
not to let it burn. Swirl the pan to evenly coat with butter and add
the squash, potatoes, and shallots. Toss and stir over medium-high heat
until the vegetables have browned around the edges, 8 to 10 minutes.
Add
the rosemary and salt. Add pepper generously to taste (about 10 grinds)
and stir well. Add the mustard and broth, stirring to mix in the
mustard. Bring the broth to a boil, cover the pan, and reduce the heat
to medium low.
After the vegetables have been braising for
10 minutes, check the liquid: it should be almost all absorbed, and the
vegetables should be completely tender. If the vegetables are tender
but still brothy, raise the heat to high and boil the liquid,
uncovered, until it's reduced to a syrupy glaze. Toss to coat the
vegetables and transfer to a serving dish.
