Hello Market Shoppers!
We're foregoing the pomp and circumstance of Oktoberfest due to the inclement weather headed our way tomorrow, but the farmers and providers will be there as always. We're a rain or shine market, so do come out to shop with us in the morning and support our local farmers. Looks like the rain should hit around 11am. Our guest provider tomorrow is the Mid-Atlantic Lily Society, selling lily bulbs. They will be with us next week as well. Don't forget to talk to to our providers about pre-ordering for Thanksgiving -- especially turkeys and baked goods!
We have good news to share -- Dan and Cathleen from North Star Orchard
welcomed a 6.5 pound baby girl into the world on Tuesday!!
Congratulations to the new family!
Music tomorrow will be by the fabulous Joe Hillman Band. They may start early, around 9am, so they can play for as long as possible before the rain starts really coming down.
Local game enthusiast, Craig, will also be back at the market tent teaching kids (and adults) how to play the ancient board game, Go. Click here to read the Wikipedia entry on the game.
We encourage you to BYOB - bring your own bag -- and if you do, you can enter a raffle to win Market Dollars that you can spend with any vendor. Starting this Saturday, each week that you BYOB to the market, stop by the market table and fill out a raffle. Each week we will draw a winner and hand over the market money!
Finally, please remember not to park in the Family Dollar parking lot -- they've had police officers there ticketing market shoppers lately. There is plenty of free parking available in the Justice Center lot, just across the alley from the Family Dollar lot. We realize that some shoppers may have conditions that make it hard for them to walk from the Justice Center lot, so we have designated 2 disabled spots close to the market.

Recipes of the Week

Pumpkin Soup in a Pumpkin
As a pumpkin pie-loving culture. Americans have grown up believing the flesh to be the most important part of the pumpkin. Originally,
however-some 6,000 years ago in Mexico-pumpkins were cultivated for
their seeds. This recipe proves that the flesh isn't just for pies but
makes a delicious soup as well. We found it best to use a heavy
pumpkin, with thick flesh that keeps it intact during baking.
1 7-lb. Cinderella pumpkin, with a 2" stem 7 tbsp. butter Salt 1 large yellow onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 1/2 cups fresh white bread crumbs, toasted 11/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. ground sage Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup grated Swiss Cheese (Birchrun Hills Alpine would be great!) 4 cups Chicken Stock 2 bay leaves 1/2 cup heavy cream, optional
1. Preheat oven to 350°. Cut a lid about 4" in diameter out of top
of pumpkin and set lid aside. Remove and discard seeds and strings. Rub
inside of pumpkin and lid with 1 tbsp. softened butter, season with
salt, and place on a baking pan.
2. Melt remaining 6 tbsp.
butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook until soft,
about 10 minutes. Stir in bread crumbs and cook for 2 minutes, then add
nutmeg and sage and season generously with salt and pepper. Remove from
heat, stir in cheese, then spoon mixture into pumpkin. Pour enough
stock into pumpkin to come within 1/2" of the rim. Lay bay leaves on
top, then fit lid onto pumpkin.
3. Bake until pumpkin
begins to soften and brown on the outside and the stock bubbles on the
inside, about 1 1/2 hours. Carefully remove from oven and transfer to a
serving platter. With a long-handled spoon, scrape flesh from bottom
and sides of pumpkin and, just before serving, stir in heavy cream if
using.
Stir-fried Buffalo and Broccoli
From Pasture Perfect by Jo Robinson
1 ½ lb grass-fed London broil (Buffalo or Beef) cut crosswise in thin slices (or other
meat from the round)
½ to ¾ cups water, divided
½ cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
3 tablespoons cooking sherry, wine or wine vinegar
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 bunch broccoli (about 4 cups)
1 large onion
3 tablespoons oil
Combine soy sauce, sugar, sherry, garlic, ginger, cornstarch and one-half
of the water and pour over sliced meat. Let marinate for at least 10 minutes.
Drain, reserving the marinade.
Brown the steak slices in a skillet. Remove the browned meat from the pan
and set aside. Brown the broccoli and onion lightly. Add remaining water and
steam until broccoli is crisp and tender. Return the meat to the skillet with
remaining marinade and simmer. Serve over rice.
( Remember to
just brown the steak before removing (not cook thoroughly), and to thoroughly
simmer the reserved marinade. The meat will be easier to cut into thin strips
if it is still partially frozen. It can finish defrosting while it marinates,
up to 24 hrs.)
