Battle of the Books 2012
Middle Country Library Battle Team
The sixteenth annual Battle of the Books was held at the Javits Lecture Center on the campus of Stony Brook University.  Thirty-six teams, representing their respective libraries came to the book trivia from eight pre-selected titles. The teams were well-prepared, the costumes were fantastic, and the excitement was everywhere.
The Middle Country Library's District Tributes were the winners and will proudly display the Battle of the Books plaque in their library for the coming year.
A complete listing of all teams scores, as well as results for non-scoring awards can be found at the Battle of the Books website.

Seriously Amazing
  Dodger cover
Sir Terry Pratchett, awarding-winning author of Discworld, introduces readers to Victorian England.  Meet Dodger, a "tosher" who spends his life in London's sewers, searching for discarded treasures. His life takes a dramatic turn when he rescues a lovely young lady from local scoundrels and meets a man named Charlie, who enlists his help to save the lady and solve a mystery.
This fantastic concoction of historical fiction introduces readers to the life of the poor during Queen Victoria's reign. The tale is delightful, not depressing - after all this is a fantasy. Readers will revel in Pratchett's enchanting characters. The authentic dialog is a treat!  I had to keep reading portions aloud, the story was so good that it begs to be shared. An excellent selection for book discussion groups.

The Raven Boys cover
Blue, the daughter of a clairvoyant, knows that that she will kill her true love with a kiss. She does not possess the power to see into the future. However, others who are in her proximity feel their supernatural powers enhanced when she is near. Her sheltered life changes when she encounters three students from a nearby exclusive school for boys who are searching for ley lines which will lead them to the body of a long-dead king.

Maggie Stiefvater's book is filled with haunting descriptions, intriguing characters and jaw-dropping plot developments. Warning: once you get into The Raven Boys you will not be able to put it down. Eat. Sleep. Check your phone before you start reading.
