Battle of the Books Scavenger Hunt ! |
We will again sponsor a photo scavenger hunt. Take photos of obscure items you spot during the competition and then post your photos on the SCLS-YS Facebook page. After the photos are posted, you can guess the origin of others' photos in the comments section under the photo. Bragging rights will go to the those who correctly identify the mystery photos as well as those who post photos. Want ideas? Here are some of the photos from last year's photo scavenger hunt.

In addition, SCLS-YS Facebook is sponsoring a contest. Share a favorite picture book, one that you love or one that your teens love. You will have a chance to win a very special prize: a picture book signed by a famous author and a well-known illustrator (the illustrator has included some art work in the signature). The author is no longer living, so the book is special treasure!

Back to School | Callie finds the perfect outlet for her love of both theater and creative design when she becomes part of the upcoming school production stage crew. She soon learns that there is as much, if not more, drama taking place off-stage. Told with her trademark cartoon style, Raina Telgemeier is a master at creating a story the perfectly captures the life of a young teen. Readers will readily relate to the all the drama associated with high school life: the crushes, aspirations, humor, heartbreak. All the drama of middle school comes vividly to life. Teens who loved Smile, those who have an interest in the theater, and anyone who like a great story of young teen angst will find a perfect read in Telgemeier's Drama.
Donovan has made a career out of causing trouble at school. If there is a campus prank, you can be sure that he is involved. So no one is more surprised than he when a paperwork snafu inadvertently places him in the school for the academically gifted. It is obvious to everyone that this is a huge mistake, Donovan has no academic talents. It will take an entire class of gifted students to determine how to help Donovan stay in the program. Will they succeed?
Ungifted is Gordon Korman's latest offering in the highly humorous, but deeply heartfelt/heart-warming category. It delivers!

Training Kits Available
|
Young Adults Deserve the Best is a training initiative to help library staff successfully connect to and work with teens in their public or school library. Created by trainers for trainers, directors, or librarians to use in their libraries, these instructional kits provide guided training with customizable PowerPoints with a complete script and optional group activities.
Kits are organized into modules, and trainers can either teach them individually in one hour segments, or combine them for a full day of training. Each kit includes a literature review and each PowerPoint presentation is accompanied by an introductory paper and list of additional resources.
The curriculum for Young Adults Deserve the Best is based on YALSA's national guidelines: Competencies for Librarians Serving Youth.
