Space Issues
|
This month we focus on Teen Spaces and highlight the newly redesigned spaces at two Suffolk County libraries. Islip Public Library's brand new teen area was featured in the June issue of VOYA, and Sachem Public Library celebrated the grand opening of a new addition to its teen space.
Congratulations to both libraries!
Whether you are considering a new space, adding additional space, or would like to make better use of existing space,YALSA's recently released guidelines for Teen Spaces, may provide helpful information. Read more about designing both physical and virtual spaces in this new online document.

Libba Bray's upcoming title: The Diviners, is the first of a four part series:a murder mystery set in the glamorous 1920s that ventures into the world of the occult. If you want a brief introduction, watch Libba retell out the first chapter with Fisher Price action figures. Crazy! The book has already been optioned for a movie -so this is one title to watch.
As a special treat, enter our historical fiction contest and you could win signed copies of both The Diviners and a book sampler, plus an ALA commemorative Diviners necklace , and we'll throw in a sequined headband just for fun! Post a historical fiction title on Facebook and these exclusive prizes may be yours.

desTEENation comes to Sachem
|
Sachem Public Library has significantly expanded its teen space. DesTEENation offers enthusiastic teens plenty of space to relax in comfortable seating, play games from one of the four X-boxes permanently mounted in a gaming station, create their own media at the Creation Station, check out iPads for use in the library, and perform on a mini-stage that includes a white board background which can be used to project images from a ceiling-mounted projector. The whiteboard may also be used for writing and it already has displayed teen graffiti and art.
To keep the engagement going, teens have access to sixteen desktop computers, an expanded shelving area for books and board games, space for quiet reading and study and even an outdoor space, opening directly to the enclosed patio with umbrella tables.
Sachem teens are enjoying their new space.

On My Reading Shelf
| Matt's life has been dysfunctional, at best. Living with his abusive dominating father, he misses for his older brother T.J. currently serving in Iraq. That world is shattered the day he receives word that his brother was killed in the line of duty. When a locker containing T.J's effects are delivered to the house, Matt realizes that the brother he worshiped, was not the man he thought he knew. Matt struggles to untangle the story of his brother's life and grapple with family secrets. His journey will take him in a borrowed car to another state and a life he never imaged.
E.M. Kokie has created a powerful story of identity. While a gay character is central to the story, this is not a "gay book", but instead Personal Effects is one boy's odyssey to learn just who his family is and most importantly, who he is. Fascinating read.
I resisted reading this book for some time. Just wasn't ready for "another vampire book". However, Team Human by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan is so not that. SO. NOT.
Readers meet high school senior Mel. Her community includes both humans and vampires, but each group definitely "sticks to their own kind" until a vampire enrolls in Mel's high school and falls in love with her best friend Cathy. This is when Mel moves into action, hoping to protect her best friend from the consequences of a human/vampire relationship.
It's filled with lines you will want to quote because the writing is just that good: at times snarky and hilarious, at times so poignant and painful, but always insightful. As a bonus, take a look at the fan art. Readers will be surprised to discover just how good a vampire book can be!
