It's National Humor Month, and that means it's time for
SOME FUN !
Tell us about a "funny thing that happened in the library".
( Please be sure to protect personal information). For example: A little girl handed me a pop-up book with all of the images of figures inside the book torn out and piled on top of the front cover. She tearfully said, "But I thought it was a pop-OUT book." Post your stories on Facebook for a chance to win a package of "smiley face" gumballs.
| Post your library story on Facebook and win a a month's worth of smiles!

Congratulations Half Hollow Hills Community Library | If you attended the December 2011 YA program, you are aware of the excellent collaborative relationship between Half Hollow Hills Community Library and the Half Hollow Hills High School East. So it comes as no surprise that the "win-win" relationship between the public library and the school has received notice in the local school newspaper. Thanks to Margie Hartough, more students are taking advantage of the public library's resources to help them prepare for for SAT tests! Great job, Margie

Catching up on new books |
It is not often that you find a YA book that is unlike any other book you can remember reading. Above by debut author Leah Bobet fits that category. Matthew is a "Teller," a member of a community of social outcasts and misfits who live below ground. Life becomes more complicated when a fire forces community members above ground, the leader of the group is brutally murdered, and Ariel, the girl he loves, runs away. Part psychological study of those with mental disorders, part love story, part mystery, and definitely otherworldly, readers will puzzle over what is real, what is right, and what it means to love. Heartbreaking. Magical. Unforgettable.
Fans of the The Red Blazer Girls series will rejoice. Mike Beil has created a great new mystery for younger readers with Summer at Forsaken Lake. Once again we meet a group of great characters: Nicholas and his twin sisters must spend the summer with Uncle Nick. When Nichols discovers an unfinished movie and a cryptic letter he and Charlie Brennan, the girl with a wicked curveball, work to unravel a mystery involving their parents' past. Set during a summer filled with sailing and baseball, here is the perfect summer mystery for tween readers! |
Hunger Games Excitement | Rogers Memorial Library teens participated in an exciting Hunger Games event. Upon arrival, the name of each attendee was submitted for the "reaping", where each teen was assigned as a tribute from a district. Teens competed in Hunger Games trivia, a makeup session, poisonous plant identification, and Wii archery. The culminating activity was a wild and crazy cornucopia relay. What fun! All attendees were treated to Mockingjay cake and lucky winners left with Hunger Games prizes, including tickets to a screening of Hunger Games.Congratulations to Casey Fehn and Laurie Rigway on an outstanding program.
Commack Public Library and Harborfields Public Library joined forces to sponsor a Saturday morning screening of The Hunger Games. Over 80 young people filled the theater on Saturday morning for an early screening, complete with popcorn and soda. Prior to the show, the teens were asked if they had already read the book. Approximately 65 raised their hands! Great to know that teens are enjoying the print version. Librarians Joanne Albano and Linda Meglio kept the entire morning well-organized and supervised. Great job ladies!
