We're focusing on teens and cancer this month. Local YA author, Tonya Hurley sponsors an essay contest each year through Gilda's Club of New York City. Any teen whose life has been affected in some way by cancer may enter. This year, Tonya has generously included Long Island teens in this contest. Thanks Tonya! Be sure to check out some of the incredible YA fiction that explores teens coping with cancer. Here are four exellent ones to consider: After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick The Fault in Our Stars by John Green I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
| SCLA is also sponsoring a Relay for Life team.

Islip Teen Space
| Mark Irish has a brand new space for teens at Islip Public Library that is chock-full of WOW features: a large, wall-mounted viewing screen, moveable shelving, track lighting, cafe seating for desktop computers, and comfortable modular seating in very interesting shapes. The color combination of deep grape and an avocado green give the room just the right amount of color, without being too trendy. Mark says that his teens already appreciate the multiple options for seating. For a recent book discussion of The Hunger Games, teens moved the furniture until they were all in a circle, then enlisted the assistance of Mark to screen various clips from movie trailers, to argue points of the movie casting and setting versus the book. Great space Mark. Congratulations!

A Wrinkle in Time
| This year marks the 50th anniversary of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. To celebrate, we have put together gift packages that celebrate this children's classic. (Be sure to check out the bonus comic by Faith Erin Hicks included in this newsletter.) To win one of these packages, post the cover and a sentence or two about a favorite book from your childhood on our Facebook page. In addition to the opportunity to win, we'll all have the opportunity to remember some of our favorite childhood titles.

Catching up on new books | Partials by Dan Wells takes place on a futuristic Long Island. Time is running out for the people on Long Island, as a virus known as RM is killing all infants at birth. Kira Walker decides to take action, searching for a cure to RM. However she is up against some serious foes: the militant government that has assumed control of the island, an outspoken revolutionary movement, and genetically engineered beings known as Partials. The story takes place in East Meadow, but readers will recognize names such as Riverhead, Walt Whitman Road, and Brooklyn. Lots of action and adventure in this book for older teens.
ReMIND by Jason Brubaker is a 2012 Great Graphic Novels for Teens selection. Sonja with her cat Victuals is caring for a lighthouse located on a lonely island. When Victuals disappears, the talk around town is that he has become another one of Lizard Man's victims. Readers will be astounded to learn what has happened to this pet, his connection to the resident rat, and the kingdom beneath the sea where Lizard Man resides. The story is bizarre, the art incredible, and the characters fascinating. Check out the trailer for this comic. Then read the first chapters of Volume 2 online!
