YOU Win!
Scholastic calendar and buttons
A new year means a new calendar and we have not one but TWO great calendars to brighten your work space. The calendar from Scholastic features art from the Read Every Day project with works by David Shannon, Jon J. Muth, Mark Teague, etc. The Macmillan calendar showcases the covers by Lane Smith, Nancy Tillman, and Jason Chin. Both calendars include important historical dates.

To make things even more fun, each calendar includes sets of "book buttons" with Macmillan calendar and buttons"Staff Pick" and "*****" (five star) ratings.  Affix these button to heavy cardstock and you have unique shelf talkers that can be reused.  The yellow and blue buttons are shown on the calendar pages. We will also include a bonus art poster!

To win a 2012 calendar, post the name of a favorite book illustrator. You might also include a cover featuring the art work and maybe a line or two stating what is especially important to you about this illustrator's art.
Two lucky librarians will win a calendar, buttons,  and poster.
It could be YOU.  Enter early. Enter often.

The February 5, 2012 program for YA library staff is one you won't want to miss and one that
you will not soon forget. We will put a very personal face on Cyber Bullying:
"Stories of Substance", a professional acting troupe will present dramatizations of stories submitted by teens who understand first-hand the pressures of bullies and cyberbullies.
A group of teens from Westhampton Beach High School will present their findings from a survey of teen's online behavior.  This will open your eyes!
Be sure to register for this excellent program or contact Tracy Bagnato at 286-1600 x1327.

Authors Unlimited: Morning Fun Stuff

Authors Unlimited teens Exactly what happens at Author's Unlimited?
Good Question.
The program begins at 10 AM in the Danzi Athletic Center. (Doors open at 9:30 for early risers!)
Here's what you can do from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.:
  • Register!  First 200 teens will receive a FREE Authors Unlimited T-shirt and First 200 teens will receive an Authors Unlimited book bag
  • Check out the bookstore. Barnes & Noble will be selling copies of our authors' books - we will have a fantastic signing party in the afternoon so that you can get signed copies of your favorites!
  • Snap a photo of you and your friends in our photo booth.
  • Get your face painted with some awesome designs (not the lame stuff for kiddies).
  • Try your luck on the spinning prize wheel.

Get ready for the RED CARPET GRAND ENTRANCE at 11 a.m.  This is when the stretch limo will show up with all the authors. They will walk the red carpet.  There will be a drum line to accompany them, cheering with pom-poms, and fantastic photo ops.  Cheer for the authors as they pose for the paparazzi !

March Movies
Take a look at some of the movies coming to the silver screen in March that were inspired by YA and children's literature. In addition to The Hunger Games, consider The Lorax and Mirror Mirror, both children's classics that may have appeal to tweens and even some teens.
These movies provide great opportunities for display and cross-promotion.

This display can go one of two ways:

You can round up all of the Dr Seuss books and make a great Dr. Seuss display. Be sure to include such titles as The Boy on Fairfield Street and The Bippolo Seed.  March 2 is Dr Seuss's birthday and everyone enjoys Dr Seuss, so celebrate!

You can also create a great environmental display with books, information on local environmental efforts, and websites. A "Go Green" display would work well.

This movie would make starting point for a display of teen fiction based on fairy tales. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Ash by Malinda Lo
Castle Waiting by Linda Medley
Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Cloaked
 by Alex Flinn
Entwined by Heather Dixon
Fairest by Gail Carson Levine
Rapunzel's Revenge by Shannon Hale
Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce

Spies Like Us
This month's books feature two totally different spy stories.

The first is a wild and crazy action adventure, Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick by Joe Schreiber, that has been wildly wildly popular with all of our Galley Group. Perry must take the dowdy Lithuanian exchange student to prom, where he learns that she is actually an assassin. Filled with exciting chase scenes and some dramatic murders, it is action adventure deluxe.

The second title is a gripping historical fiction thriller. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein introduces readers to two extraordinary young women who becomes friends. One is a pilot and the other a spy. A story of switched identity, espionage, secrets and loyalty. Who is telling the truth?
This book caused me to literally gasp aloud as I was reading.
Fantastic  historical fiction!
