First there was X-Men, then the Green Lantern, and now, Captain American will be appearing in theaters. (Check out the trailer by clicking on the image.) Also learn the story behind the shield. 2011 is the summer of the Superhero. With multiple movies and even a Broadway show based on comic book characters, these stories are familiar to many more of your teens. This is the perfect time to highlight your comic collection. Get out all of the superhero stories and don't forget to include movie tie-ins and art books in your display. With interest like this, you might see comic hero titles flying off the shelves. Personal Pick: Captain America: The Chosen

Steampunk World
|
Copiague Memorial Public Library opted for a steampunk theme this summer. Stefanie Gangone has created a room full of "technical Victorian curiosities". Great posters, book displays, and wall art complete the look. View more of Copiague's steampunk on the Scls-ys Suffolk Facebook. Personal pick: The Art of Steampunk

Meet the Cartoonists | Summer seems like a great time to highlight your graphic novel collection. Try assembling your comic books to make a fantastic book display. Include some drawing books and "how to create your own cartoon" books as well.
It might be interesting to feature a few contemporary cartoonists in your display. Include a photo, short bio, and brief bibliography of their recent works. Be sure to include authors and illustrators of the comics that are popular with teens in your library.
Featured below are four cartoonists that are recently of particular interest to librarians in Suffolk County.

Rebecca Guay
| Some YA librarians had the opportunity to meet Rebecca at BEA. She illustrated Jane Yolen's latest graphic novel from Dark Horse: The Last Dragon. The art is so stunning, Readers will be enchanted with this fantasy tale.
|
Joe Infurnari
| We met Joe Infurnari, who introduced us to Marathon, his current project. His upcoming title MUSH! Sled Dogs with Issues is laugh-out-loud funny. This is definitely for older readers- dogs discuss breeding. But it is hilarious!

| Ben is the author of Zita the Spacegirl, a delightful comic story of a young girl's space explorations. Her curiosity sends Zita and her friend Joseph to a planet inhabited by strange creatures, who capture her friend. Zita dons a green cape, and seeks to rescue her friend.
Ben visited Smithtown Nesconset children's department earlier this year, to the delight of all. While this is definitely a children's book. It is too much fun to miss.

Greetings! |
Darien Library in Connecticut hosts an annual unconference: Kid Camp. The day-long event will take place on Thursday August 11. While the topics mainly focus on library services for children, the 2010 sessions on e-books and tween programing were informative for YA services. Perhaps a group of YA librarians could attend together and share the ferry cost? Contact Barbara if you are interested in traveling together to Darien and attending this conference as a group. Hint: Did you find the hidden surprise in this newsletter?
