Commack Teens "On December 14, 2010 the Commack Public Library Teens Volunteer Group participated in a wonderful night of putting together care packages for our troops to be donated to the Cpl Christopher G. Scherer, Leave No Marine Behind Project. 35 teen volunteers sorted supplies that were donated by the Commack Public Library staff, librarians throughout Suffolk and Nassau counties and the teen volunteers themselves. Through the evening the teen volunteers sorted supplies, wrote letters to our troops and packed a total of 18 boxes to be sent overseas. The highlight of the evening was a visit from Tim Scherer, who spoke to the teens about the importance of what they were doing and why just one one their packages will make a difference in the lives of our service men and women. The teen volunteers listened intently while Mr. Scherer told them the story of his son Cpl Christopher Scherer and why the Scherer family has formed this foundation. In the words of the Scherer family: ' Our mission is to make one minute of one day just a little bit better for a Marine who is serving in harms way.' I chose the Cpl Christopher Scherer, Leave No Marine Behind Project because this is a foundation that is close to home for us here in Commack. The Scherer family lives in East Northport and supports our local troops, with most of their care packages being sent to men and women whose hometowns are on Long Island. As a Young Adult Librarian, I was extremely proud of the 35 teens who volunteered their time and was told by many of them that they walked away from this project with a greater understanding of what our service men and women go through each and every day." More of a Good Thing
My stack of 2011 YA "want to read" titles continues to grow. If you would like to start the year out with a "sure thing", choose the latest books from three well-known authors.
Lauren Oliver, author of Before I Fall has created another winner with Delirium. Lena is about to turn eighteen, the age when she will receive the cure for "the delirium", the term for being in love. She will have a life without the pain of love. But then the unthinkable happens...
Remember Mia, the talented young musician who lost her family and her will to live in If I Stay? If Gayle Forman's poignant story has been haunting you for the past year, get ready for Where She Went. Now its Adam's turn to tell their story of love, loss, and music.
Readers who are caught in the spell of Incarceron will be thrilled to know that Sapphique, the second volume of this trilogy is now available. What a delicious, mysterious, magical world Catherine Fisher has created. Fantasy doesn't get any better.
