It's All About Community
Commack Public Library, The Smithtown Library-Commack Branch, and the Commack School District have worked together to create a fantastic program: One Book, One Community. Editions of Three Cups of Tea for adult, children, and young readers ensure that the entire community is able to participate in the community-wide event. An introductory letter from the school superintendent was sent to all district residents.
Under the leadership of Smithtown Commack Librarian Will Salas, Community Service 101 served as the January 19 "kick-off" event. Joanne Albano, Commack Librarian and Maryanne McAuley, High School Future Educators of America Facilitator, have arranged for teens to assist children with quilt programs during the February school break. A culminating program with illustrator Susan L. Roth will take place on March 8 at the library and at the high school. Joanne commented on this program: "The one thing I will say that came out of this wonderful community wide project,
is that we now have an excellent relationship with the school district."
Commack has created something extraordinary!

Great Graphic Novels for Teens
Working on the 2010 Great Graphic Novels selection committee was difficult, time-consuming, but very rewarding. This group of librarians with a variety of experiences and expertise came together to create a list which reflects reading interests of teens throughout the United States. Special thanks go to those Suffolk teens and librarians who provided input into the selection process. One of the titles selected is a direct result of a Suffolk librarian suggestion and another selected title reflects reviews from several Suffolk teens. Both titles are on the list because of YOU! Take a look at the list and let me know what you think.

Terrific Treats from ALA
I heard Amy Ignatow speak in Boston and she was SO FUNNY that I couldn't wait to read her book, The Popularity Papers. The book is just as much fun as a personal appearance. Promise. Cross my heart. Lydia and Julie create the ultimate tween diary, sharing their observations on popularity and friendship. Handwritten in alternating colors and styles, this compilation of cartoons, photographs, doodles and snarky observations begs to be shared with your BFF. Love it!
Jennifer Lynn Barnes' Raised by Wolves is the kind of paranormal story I can really get into. After Bryn's family is killed by wolves, she is adopted and raised by a pack of werewolves. When Bryn discovers a teen locked in a cage and a string of mysterious deaths, she goes searching for answers. This is one tough chick, who keeps knives strapped to her legs and silver bullets handy. Librarians will especially appreciate Bryn's comments while researching online: "Who knows how many of his attacks we missed? This is Google we're talking about here, not science." Werewolf meets girl with A.T.T.I.T.U.D.E. It delivers.
Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination. |
