Greetings!

Welcome to 2010: a brand new year. Hope that this new year is filled with new experiences for you.

I am excited about our focus on User Experience. It's fun to think about creating a Pulse Point, reaching teens via SMS, and making the Teen User Experience a priority.

Please keep in touch. I'd love to hear what's happening in your library!

West Islip Teens Know That...

  • If Meg Cabot could be a superhero she would like to be Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  • Melissa de la Cruz thinks that secretly she is a drag queen.
  • Tonya Hurley is an identical twin.

For the Love of Kids & Books

The Hospital Outreach Visit Program serves children on the Pediatric and Pediatric Psychology floors of Stony Brook University Hospital, as well as Pediatric Cancer Clinic patients.
Dedicated Suffolk County public librarians have been making visits to these young people for over twenty years. As a part of each visit, the librarians offer each patient a brand new book and an oversized envelope filled with games and activities. All books and materials for these visits are provided by donations.

On a recent visit, one librarian listed on her response form that children and teens would like to receive copies of graphic novels. SCLS had just received a generous gift to purchase Hospital Outreach materials and holiday season seemed like the perfect opportunity to provide graphic novels for these young patients.

Thanks to the warm hearts of local businesses and Diamond Book Distributors, this dream became a reality.  Two boxes of assorted graphic novels arrived with the giant snow storm. Now Suffolk patients have a special treat: graphic novels! We offer a sincere thanks to the wonderful Suffolk County librarians who make these visits and our gracious benefactors

Start 2010 with a Great Read

Welcome to 2010! A brand new bunch of fantastic books await your reading pleasure. Here are a few to check out:

Here is the perfect book to start 2010. The Gardener, a futuristicThe Gardener cover adventure by S.A. Bodeen will creep you out and give you plenty of reasons to be concerned about global warming, world population, and feeding the planet's hungry. If you look carefully at the cover, you will get a large hint as to the solution enterprising scientists use to address these issues. But are we ready for a planet of people who get their nutrition via photosynthesis? You will be "planted" to your chair for this one and won't be able to leave until the very end.

Heist Society coverAlly Carter's Heist Society is so much fun! I loved this twist on a spy theme. A family of international art thieves find themselves accused of a theft they didn't commit and facing a countdown to uncover the truth. Katarina Bishop enlists the help of her own teenage thieves  to recover the stolen art, outfoxing both Interpol and the mafia. This is escapist fiction at its best. I was totally captivated!

Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination.
