Fun Fun Fun at Rogers
Rogers Memorial Library is a fun place to be! Laurie Rigway keeps things exciting with a Facebook page which promotes upcoming programs as well as keeping Southampton teens connected. With photos, videos, and 181 friends, Rogers Facebook page is the digital branch for the Rogers teen department.
This idea has brought teens into the library for a fantastic photo op. Laurie posted a life-sized photo of Edward Cullen on the door to the teen room. A bevy of Twilight fans with cell phones have made their way to the teen room to have a photo taken with the hottest vampire. How cool is that? Great ideas, Laurie.

Suffolk Homework Help
Creative marketing for Suffolk Homework Help just keeps getting better and better. Theresa Owens created this YouTube video promoting Suffolk Homework Help. The video shows teens how to get help using both the tutors and the resource center. The local teens, music, and information all work together to create a great promotional. Isn't it terrific?
Laurie Rigway has created a simulated school chalkboard with Suffolk Homework Help information. She has replaced the tear-off strip flyer 3 times. Teens come in and tear off a strip. However, Laurie's creativity doesn't stop there. She was able to locate a Homework Help spot near the parent sign-in for Parent Teacher conferences at school. As parents signed in, she shared information about Suffolk Homework Help. She also created a postcard for each student. Students can bring the Suffolk Homework Help postcard to Rogers Memorial Library and redeem the postcard for a candy bar, wrapped with information about this service. Way to go Laurie!

Graphic Novels Well-Worth Reading
Before 2009 comes to an end, here are a few more titles published this year which are well-worth a look. I enjoyed all three!
I'm usually not a huge fan of Shojo, but Mixed Vegetables by Ayumi Komura had me "hook, line and sinker" from the first panel. Hanayu Ashitaba is the daughter of a famous pastry chef. Her dream is to become a sushi chef. She schemes to make this happen by attracting the attentions of the son of a well-known sushi chef. Maybe if he falls in love with her, she can realize her dream. Even if you don't like sushi, you will like this fishy treat.
Tom Sidell's Gunnerkrig Court is one clever, quirky story. Set in a girl's boarding school, Antimony discovers that the simple and strange things that are happening may be more weird than she ever imaged. As one Suffolk teen noted, the panel art becomes more complex as the story proceeds. Smart clever writing within a compelling mystery.
For a great teen super hero story, it doesn't get much better than Jonathan Letham's Omega the Unknown. Lethem has taken the original story and created a wonderful take on the orphaned teen, caught up in a strange world of robots and the evil villain Mink, while working at a hot dog stand in Manhattan. Yes, it sounds unbelievable. But somehow it works. Fantastic read!
Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination.
