Greetings!
It's hard to believe that 2008 is coming to a close. This year has been filled with lots of great new YA literature, summer programs packed with teens, and a thrilling finish for Battle of the Books. Hope the final month of 2008 is a memorable one for you and your teens.
Thanks for all you do!

Library Love Story
Kassia, employed at East Islip Public Library since her high school days, met a good looking patron at the library one night and he asked for her phone number. They found that they had a lot in common and began dating. After her graduation from library school, Kassia and Andrew were married at East Islip Public Library on September 2, 2007.
Kassia says "After the library had it's addition/renovation, I had always admired it's grand entryway, and the floor plan. Using the main floor leading up to the reference desk lent itself to make a beautiful aisle. So we figured, why not have our ceremony in the exact place that facilitated our meeting."

Congratulations Andrew & Kassia!

Teen Spaces
Huntington Public Library's Teen Territory is the perfect spot for teens to "hang out." Kristine Casper and her staff have created a teen-friendly space where teens are welcome to relax with a magazine or book in comfy chairs, play computer games with friends, view movies from the wall-mounted TV, and even grab a healthy snack (juice, pretzels, etc) from the vending machine. The teens are able to have their own space that is monitored electronically at the reference desk located in the main children's area.
A separate area outside of the teen room furnished with computers, a printer, and resource books is available for quiet study. It wasn't surprising to learn that a group of eleventh graders choose to come to the library to plan for an upcoming meeting on high school issues.
Congratulations Kristine and staff!
Be sure to check out the paintings in the Huntington Family Services room and other library photos at SCLS Teen Tour .

A Few More Favorites for 2008
2008 has been a fantastic year for young adult books. Here are a few more tiles too good to miss.
Atomic Robo by Brian Clevenger is just too much fun and too funny. A robot with automatic intelligence works for the U.S. military on top secret missions. It is loaded with plenty of action and great art, but what sets this superhero apart is the clever dialog and hilarious situations.
In My One Hundred Adventures by Polly Horvath we meet Jane, ready for a life of adventure. She explores questions of who to trust and what to believe as she babysits, hands out Bibles and struggles to learn the identity of her father. While the audience for this book tends to tween-age, the characters are endearing, the setting delightful and the writing excellent.
Sarah Dessen's Lock and Key introduces us to Ruby, a girl who has learned to fend for herself, when abandoned by a dysfunctional mother. Being underage, she is forced to move in with her older married sister. Ruby must decide if she can learn to trust another with her life and her heart. A sweet well-told story.
