Greetings!
Is it just me, or has this been one incredibly busy summer? It seems like every library that I have visited this summer has been filled with teens, programs, and activities. This is a nice problem for libraries.
Hope you have time to catch your breath and enjoy the last month of summer.
Best,

Picture Yourself at Picture This
Picture yourself at the beautiful Bourne Mansion.
Picture yourself sitting in the ballroom listening to Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier talking about their collaboration on a manga version of X-men; hearing Jessica Abel's life-sucking "graphic" presentation; laughing along with Erik P. Kraft, creator of Tom Mayo; and viewing Robin Brenner's dazzling slide show of Japanese art and manga.
Picture yourself enjoying lunch in the gazebo overlooking Fire Island, strolling through the beautiful mansion while artists create before your eyes, obtaining signed copies of books by outstanding authors and illustrators, and winning great prizes during our lunchtime raffle.
Picture yourself at Picture This. Live the Dream.

Picture This: Author Profile
Raina Telgemeier, one of the stars of last year's symposium is returning this year and bringing her collaborator (and husband) Dave Roman. Their presentation is titled "Collaborating on Graphic Novels: Two Visions, One Goal."
Dave and Raina are presently involved with a very exciting collaboration: Marvel Entertainment and Del Rey Manga will publish their manga version of X-men. Here is quote from The Beat:
"It's the X-Men as you've never seen them before, with the storyline fashioned as a private school shjo comedy... As the only girl in the all-boys School for Gifted Youngsters, Kitty Pryde, a mutant with phasing abilities, is torn between the popular Hellfire Club, led by flame-throwing mutant Pyro, and the school misfits, whom she eventually bands together as the X-Men."
I can't wait! Manga X-Men!

Nice Surprises at ALA
It's always nice to make new discoveries, and strolling through the exhibits at ALA brought my attention to two publishers.
Simon & Schuster has a new line of graphic novels. In addition to a graphic adaptation of the popular and action-packed Pendragon: The Merchant of Death, I enjoyed Chiggers by Hope Larson, a thoughtful story of girls at summer camp. In addition to friendships lost and found, and a summer romance, Chiggers includes fun bonus information such as how to play the card game Egyptian Rat Screw, directions for creating a friendship bracelet, and scientific facts on lightning. A great girl-friendly summer read. All you need is your bandana and some marshmallows.
I have always associated Marshall Cavendish with high quality reference books for children. I was pleasantly surprised to find fiction offerings for both children and teens. In addition Stolen, a new title by Vivian Vande Velde, I was captivated by A Field Guide to Monsters: Googly-Eyed Wart Floppers, Shadow-Casters, Toe-Eaters, and Other Creatures by Johan Olander. This book is so much fun, that I got caught up in the clever illustrations of monsters, complete with Latin Name, Habitat, Diet, Distinguishing Features, Life Cycle, and Safety Measures. You can easily enjoy an entire summer afternoon perusing its pages. Best it put away before nightfall!
Please consult the SCLS Professional Collection for a complete listing of all titles available for examination.
