Some innovative and cooperative programs worth mentioning include : Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library at the Beach, Hampton Bays Public Library and Westhampton Free Library Cosplay party, Middle Country Public Library and Patchogue-Medford Library combined cast for High School Musical. These are just a few of the outstanding summer programs in Suffolk County.
Hope to see you on September 26th at Syosset!

Battle of the Books 2007
Battle of the Books 2007 was an exciting event. Some teams we'll remember: The courageous kids from Deer Park Public Library and Middle Country Public Library who competed with less than complete teams - what real heroes! The teams from Shelter Island Public Library and Floyd Memorial Library, who know the true meaning of a long commute. The Smithtown Library, Kings Park Branch, ("You can never have too many boas.") and the Rogers Memorial Library, who both managed to steal the show during the Parade of Teams.
Congratulations to Sachem Public Library for winning the 2007 Battle of the Books Championship.

Port Jefferson's New Teen Annex
The Port Jefferson Free Library has completed the new Young Adult Annex and it looks wonderful. A lot of creativity, planning and hard work made the dream a reality. Erin Schaarschmidt began with a proposal to her director, suggesting that the former book store be used as a space for young adults. Erin did her homework and polled students at the local school on their preferences. The teens suggestions were incorporated into the final plan. Teen suggestions included space for a teen art gallery, window seats, and color choices. Teens were involved in meetings with the community planning board and helped set up their new facility.
Already the room is bustling with activity. Programs include Scene It using the new large screen, a Fright Night Lock-In and a four week Improv workshop.
Erin says that the best things she did were to order "comfy furniture" and use lots of color. She wishes that she had included a sound system in addition to the theater system.
It looks great Erin. Congratulations to you! |

Anastasia Goodstein is coming to Long Island! Anastasia is the author of ypulse: an independent blog for teen media and marketing professionals. When you want to know what's happening in teen culture, this blog is the place to start. But of course, you already knew that.
This is the program for anyone who works with teens or wants to better understand teens. Don't miss it!
Anastasia will also be at Book Revue on September 26 at 8 p.m. You will be able to get signed copies of her book at that event. |

Advance Reader's Copies
This month I have enjoyed some great ARCs.
Undercover by Beth Kephart reminds me of days on the northern California coast, when I would search the beach for a bright spot of carnelian. This book is like a little gem that can be overlooked, but is a true treasure. The story revolves around Elisa, a Cyranno figure who ghostwrites love notes for boys at her school. Of course, she eventually is attracted to one of her clients. She struggles with this dilemma, while witnessing fissures within her family. Elisa finds her solace and strength in nature, a frozen pond, and poetry. The story, language, and poetry are so beautiful, but very accessible.
If you're ready to leave the pretty, air-brushed vampires and read one that is truly scary, you might like to try My Swordhand is Singing by Marcus Sedgwick. Based on legends from Eastern Europe, this story includes the very creepy"Wedding of the Dead", which is a marriage at the graveyard between the corpse of a young man killed by a vampire and the young woman chosen to be his bride. This is a spine-tingling, goosebump-inducing tale of terror.
A special treat in my mail this week has been the Harvey Comic Classics Volumes One and Two from Dark Horse. Volume One contains 100 Casper The Friendly Ghost classic comic stories from 1949 to 1966. I had forgotten how much I liked Casper: the charming little guy who just wanted to have friends. The early drawings reveal his physical charm and personality. I was amazed at the care that went into preserving the original artwork and the careful restoration of color registration. All ages will enjoy the adventures of Casper and his friends Spooky, Nightmare, Wendy and the Ghostly Trio. Volume Two contains 125 collected Richie Rich: The Poor Little Rich Boy classic comic stories from 1953 to 1971. Beginning with opening galley of Richie asking, "Father, may I use the car to spend my fifty cents weekly allowance?" you can follow the outrageous adventures of the kid we all wanted to be: the rich kid who wasn't spoiled. Casper and other Dark Horse titles will be available at the symposium for a 20% discount.
