Greetings!
Here comes the event all the teens are waiting for: summer! Long days, warm evenings, the beach, no school - summer is an event!
This month's issue focuses on  suggestions and ideas for library sponsored events.
Please feel free to send information and/or photos from your successful summer events.

Summer Movies
Air conditioning, soda, and pop-corn. It must be time for summer movies!
When you think about movie tie-ins, think beyond books. For example, with Nancy Drew try: text messages (it's a stolen cell phone mystery), an  online game, AOL/Seventeen contest, and of course, the books! (It would be fun to do a mother/daughter nostalgia display of Nancy Drew through the ages.) Vote for your favorite Nancy!
Tie-ins for  Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer could include: Marvel Comics (this might make another great nostalgia display. Wikipedia has some great info), the official Fantastic Four Wiki, several contests, a screening of the 2005 film, and a trivia contest (see the quotes and trivia on the IMDA)
Tie-ins for the  Harry Potter  movie and final book are everywhere. Several libraries already have great events planned. We would love to hear about your library event.  (Check out the Harry Potter Knight Bus Tour  if you will be near one of the scheduled library locations.)
Northport Prom Fashion Show
Prom
Here are a few new ways to celebrate this big event:
  • Candy Reeder planned a prom fashion show featuring library pages modeling gowns from a local dress shop. For more details see the Northport-East Northport Teen Page.
  • For the gothic romance readers, an Eclipse Prom might be a possibility. This could also be held in August to celebrate the release of Eclipse. See Stephanie Meyer's website for ideas.
  • Take advantage of all the hype surrounding Prom Queen with a contest and display of your own. See the Prom Queen site for inspiration. Take a look at this Prom Queen review. Maybe you could create a "message board" to record reviews.
  • For those teens who will be driving, here's a great website with a "drive to the prom" online game and a Road Ready sweepstakes.

Beowulf Graphic Novels
I am taking a graphic novel course, so have spent hours training my eyes to move right to left through Fruits Basket and Bleach series.

Several graphic novels have also caught my attention. If you have not seen and read Beowulf by Gareth Hinds, I highly recommend it. The text is true to the spirit of the original and the illustrations are gripping.
I also enjoyed Bob Marley by Gary Jeffrey, from the Rosen Graphic Biography series. I like the Who's Who and background on the history of Jamaica and music. The discography and glossary make this a useful volume. Graphic biographies: a good concept!
Last minute entry: The Arrival by Shaun Tan, a most amazing wordless picture book/graphic novel. Take a peek.

Note: If you have a teen group interested in participating in a graphic novel media presentation for the symposium, please contact me.
