Searching the web with Spiderman painting by Tom Casper at Hampton Bays Public Library

Greetings!
This month I have been on the road. I feel like John Steinbeck, as he headed from Sag Harbor on Rocinante in search of America - only I have been traveling in the old blue Toyota from Bellport in search of teen libraries. It has been a wonderful journey, filled with great spaces and programs. However, the most gratifying experience has been meeting the teen librarians. Suffolk County has the BEST young adult librarians. The communities where they work are most fortunate to have this caliber of professional library staff. Thanks for sharing. Barbara

Teen Spaces
Suffolk County has so many great looking public libraries. These are worth a look: East Islip has a fantastic "Teen Bistro" theme, complete with neon sign, awnings, and bistro tables. South Huntington has positioned the teen area next to an enclosed outdoor area with turquoise vinyl comfortable seating facing outside. Chairs in various bright colors surround the computers and tables. Hampton Bays have created an exciting teen space with great posters, wall murals, and signage. Their large space is filled with the most creative displays!
Both Half Hollow Hills and Riverhead are reworking their spaces. Their spaces will be featured in future editions of TeenDirect.

Teen Programs
Here is a partial list of some teen programs I learned about on my travels:
- Ann Gomez and Jo-Ann Carhart
have an enthusiastic Teen Advisory Board. Each month the teens plan and
design a bulletin board that highlights the teen library events. This
group also planned, organized and ran a library book sale.
- Margie Hartough has an amazing sytem for organzing all her teen volunteers. Teens
work with the childrens' programs including tutoring youngsters and
monitoring the children's computer area. She has a very successful
"Kids and Teens" monthly program where teens help kids with crafts and a "Saturday Salon" where teen style hair and give manicures.
- Janet Scherer
has a Teen Advisory Board of about 30 members. Teens recently had a
very successful Rockfest. Groups came to play, not to compete, and were
featured in a huge poster. Several of her teens participate in a galley
project, where they read and review galleys for publishers. Read more about it.
- Laura LaSita
organized a teen art show and has recently arranged for manga artists
to conduct a series of classes. The teens will create storyboards,
to be saved on DVDs, and shown at a library Anime Film Festival.
- Matthew Wuthenow and Andrew Bollerman
have created both a teen blog and de-licio-us pages. Interesting
programs include a very successful "Pizza and Politics" night where
teens met with local officials, and some interesting crafts, including
messenger bags made out of plastic newspaper bags. They are so cool. I want
one!

The Golden Compass
I'm a huge Philip Pullman fan and so am looking forward to the movie release in December. If you have not read the book, you might consider listening to the audio book. It is the best audio book I have ever enjoyed. A wonderful cast of characters bring the story to life. As an added bonus, Pullman is the narrator. The movie website and IMDB have information on the film. After reading about the filming, I am crossing my fingers that I won't be disappointed! I can't wait to see how the film interprets the armored bears, daemons, and the dust. You can view the trailer on utube. Dr. Mary K. Chelton loaned us a copy of the 2002 Arbuthnot Lecture given by Philip Pullman at Queens College. Perhaps if there is some interest, we could plan a morning to view his lecture. If you are interested in a "Breakfast with Philip Pullman", i.e. breakfast and a viewing of the lecture, let me know.
