Greetings!

Linda Braun's presentation on Literacy and Teens has caused me to think about how I define literacy.  I think literacy can exist at three levels: the functional level, where individuals can fill out an application, read instructions; the aesthetic level, where consumers can enjoy and appreciate books, music, art, etc; and most importantly, the empowerment level, where  individuals use communication skills to create meaningful change for themselves and their community.

This issue of TeenDirect explores suggestions for providing information, resources, and opportunities to empower teens.

Keep sharing your great ideas and photos!

Empowering Teens
Teens at Port Jefferson Free Library have been active in planning and promoting the Annex, their proposed library teen center. Members of the TAB attended a Port Jefferson Village Council planning meeting to demonstrate support for the Annex. They have worked to be involved and informed about the process of creating a new library space.

These teens also spoke with members of the press to clarify a recent news article about their plans.

Magician at Mattituck
Mattituck TAB
Mattituck-Laurel Library has an active Teen Advisory Board that meets the first Monday of each month to plan programs for teens. Teen librarian Lynn Maaiki says of teen input into program planning: "You think you know what they want, but you don't. You have to go to the source." This teen group decided they wanted a program on magic and mind-reading. Lynn says she probably would not have selected this program, but the teens wanted it, and supported it, so she booked the magic show. It was an overwhelming success.

The Power of Story
I have been enjoying several new books that explore the power of the individual. The Silenced by James DeVita takes place in the future when the Zero Tolerance Party has taken over the country. Marena  witnessed the ZTP killing her mother and putting her father under house arrest. She feels that somehow she must make a stand, no matter what the consequences.

HoldupHoldup by Teri Fields revolves around the choices we make each day and the impact small choices can have on our lives.  Through multiple characters' voices, Fields chronicles the holdup of  a fast food restaurant.  Readers glimpse the results of seemingly insignificant individual choices. I loved the "twist" ending.

Okay, this isn't at all serious and I'm not sure how well it fits, but I just had to include Miracle Wimp by Eric Kraft. This book is a journal with text and cartoon illustrations describing the life of a high school senior.  I was laughing out loud at the descriptions of wood shop class. Then found myself "tearing up" during the break-your-heart cruelty of teens to "outcasts".  It's a very quick, fun, and insightful glimpse into high school life.
