Greetings!
Welcome to the February edition of Teen Direct. I'm trying a new look with this issue. The calendar has been moved to the left sidebar. I hope this makes the issue easier to read.
Lots of exciting things are happening in Suffolk County Libraries. Thanks for sharing your successes with all of us!

  • SCLS meeting on Thursday March 29. Librarians will  share  technology expertise and have the opportunity to play with some new technology and devices. Note the coupon below for a chance to win prizes.

Summer Reading ProgramYou Never Know poster
Time to start thinking about summer reading programs. If you are using the YNK campaign, there are several sources of good material. I love the resources from ImaginOn. Check out their  movie, audio, and comic book style poster at Collaborative Summer Reading Program.

You can download "fingerprint" fonts at  the California Library Association teen resources page. I put the file on my desktop. To get this font into your font file: 1) Extract zip file, 2) Open a Word document, 3) Go to "settings" and then "control panel",  4) Open font folder,  5) Go to "file" and select "Install new font", 6) Find "print" folder and select the font. Note: This font only works when you have the caps lock on. You can change the size and color of the thumbprints using the Word toolbar.
While you're in the California website, be sure to check out the workshop handout materials

To DanceGraphic Reviews
Graphic novels have moved into the spotlight with the selection of American Born Chinese by Yang as the Printz Award winner. Here are some recent examples of interesting books in that medium: The 9/11 Report: A Graphic  Adaptation by Jacobson contains story panels describing the sequence of events. Maps, charts, and other graphic representations of facts are interspersed throughout the narrative. As the KLIATT review states, "It is quite astounding what the format is capable of conveying."
To Dance by Siegel is a memoir that beautifully captures the life, work, and dreams of a young ballerina from Puerto Rico. This touching book is a Sibert Honor Book.
Garage Band by Gipi is scheduled for release in April, 2007. The international origins of this title are interesting: first published in France, it is illustrated in watercolor by a leading Italian graphic artist.
