JEWISH EDUCATION FOR THE CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
For most children there are many options to acquire a good Jewish education. Parents can choose to send their children to a synagogue's religious school, to a full time day school, or to Judaica High School for older children. With so many choices, it is a simple task to find programs that fit an individual student's learning style. This is often a much more difficult task for the parents of children with special needs. The wide range of exceptionalities that fall under the umbrella of "special needs", often sends parents on a mission to locate, or even design, a program specifically tailored to their child. How does that parent find a suitable program and what does a parent do if their community doesn't offer Jewish education programs for the specifics needs of their child? In truth, many communities do not offer any kind of Jewish education programming for this population. The choice for a parent then is either Jewish education through a mainstream local religious school or no Jewish education at all.
Thankfully, this is not the choice for parents of children with special needs in Broward County. A number of synagogues have created special programming for children with varying learning styles. These programs modify the hours of learning, adjust the academic expectations and hire special education classroom teachers all in an effort to meet the individual needs of the student. Some of these programs have small self-contained classes for the students, while others are more inclusive.
One such unique and highly successful program is Orloff CAJE's "Proud and Jewish Program" for children who have severe physical and developmental disabilities. This program provides such children with a Jewish education designed to instill in them a love for and a commitment to their heritage. The program meets every Sunday at the Soref JCC and includes studies in the prayers, Jewish holidays and culture, as well as basic Hebrew reading. Anyone who has attended the very moving Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremonies of these students will attest to the program's impact on these children's lives.
Please contact the Orloff CAJE office at 954-660-2073 for more info on our "Proud and Jewish Program" and other special needs Jewish educational opportunities, including how you may ensure the future of these essential programs through your financial support.
Rabbi Ezra Levy, Ed.D.

In addition, there are about 2 weeks left for registration on our Adult Only Program - April 15 - 25, 2012. Information is available by clicking here or emailing Rochelle Baltuch at rbaltuch@aol.com.

ADULT AND FAMILY EDUCATION
Pictured above are students from Orloff CAJE's all new adult learning program -- The Pillars of Judaism. Two classes are taking place at the David Posnack JCC and the students are raving about the teachers and innovative curriculum. Amy Wilpon Weinberg, a student in Sandra Lilienthal's Wednesday morning Pillars I class, had this to say about her experience: "Can I tell you how much I LOVE Wednesdays and look forward to our class? You are so inspirational and full of all kinds of interesting Judaica -- my mom and husband look forward to dinner on Wednesdays when I share what I learned!"
Also part of December's fall line-up of adult education programs were two exciting fall hostels, one on December 1st at Temple Beth Torah/Tamarac Jewish Center, and one on December 6th at the David Posnack JCC. Following the program in Tamarac, Junie Rabin, a participant, e-mailed the Orloff CAJE office to say "Yesterday was a winner! Congrats!"
Plans are now underway for the Ruth E. Cohan Winter Hostel at the Posnack JCC in February.
November's ShalomTime was taped for the L'Chaim TV Program which will be aired nationally sometime in January. Rabbi Thompson of the Sunrise Jewish Center read The Shabbat Box to families at the Stirling Road Library. December's program will feature Chanukah, with sessions taking place in Coral Springs, Davie, and Hollywood.
