BCHLA E-News

E-News Issue #9 December 2008
Promoting and Protecting the Freedoms of HomeschoolersGreetings!

The Board Members of BCHLA would like to extend to you and your family a very Merry Christmas & a Happy and Healthy 2009!

President's Pen

Merry Christmas everyone! Here's an update of what's been happening at the BCHLA office for the past few months.

Foundational Skills Assessment - I have been speaking to the office of the Inspector of Independent Schools and am able to report the following: The 2009 Administrative Instructions are in the process of being finalized and should reflect the legal rights of home schooled children.

At this point, they are unwilling to put in the phrase that I have strongly recommended they include: "Home schooled children should be invited to participate in the FSA." The M of E believes that all children should participate in the FSA testing. I believe page three of the Administrative Instructions will include a statement regarding home schoolers "who participate", allowing that some may not. Watch for updates on the FSA 2009 Administrate Instructions at http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/assessment/fsa/ You'll want to click on the link Administrative Instructions (PDF) for any changes to the instruction manual from last year.

Please be assured that the FSA office has been advised by the Ministry of Education that there is NO obligation for home schooled children to participate. This is only an option that we may or may not choose to exercise.

Funding to Registered Families - Although no school is under any obligation to pass on any funding to registered children/families, most of the schools accepting registration do pass on between $150 - $200 per child. If you are having a difficult time being reimbursed by the school you have registered with please contact our office. We will be happy to contact the school on your behalf. My understanding is that the proper channels of authority that you should go through are: School Administrator/Receptionist, Principal, Superintendent of School and then the School Board. Our recommendation is that if you do not have resolution after speaking to the school principal, you might want to consider contacting our office and let us act as an advocate on your behalf.

(Ed. Note.We have recently taken steps to assist a family in the lower mainland who was having difficulty receiving the funds and are happy to say this is close to resolution.)

Support Groups - We are excited to have board members who are available to speak at your support groups during the year. We are able to bring/mail brochures for your group as well as make a presentation on the home educational choices available in British Columbia, the differences of those choices as well as why we promote and seek to protect the rights of those who choose registration for their child(ren). Please contact our office 604-543-5025 in the Lower Mainland, 1-866-444-2299 across BC or email info@bchla.bc.ca if your group is wanting to book a presentation. Many families still do not understand the difference between Distributed Learning and Registration. This is a great opportunity to have questions answered and differences explained in a clear, concise manner. BCHLA wants to help you make an informed decision based on what's best for your child.

BC Home Learners' Association - The ONLY provincial organization that that has nothing to win or lose with your home school decisions.

14 Days of Homeschooling

On the first day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Can you homeschool legally?"

On the second day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"

On the third day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Do you give them tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"

On the fourth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "What about P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool
legally?"

On the fifth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "YOU ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized,
can you homeschool legally?"

On the sixth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "How long will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E., do you give them
tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"

On the seventh day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Look at what they're missing, how long will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE,
what about P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"

On the eighth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Why do you do this, look at what they're missing, how long will you homeschool, YOU
ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"

On the ninth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "They'll miss the prom, why do you do this, look at what they're missing, how long
will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"

On the tenth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "What about graduation, they'll miss the prom, why do you do this, look at what
they're missing, how long will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E., do you give them tests, are they socialized, can you
homeschool legally?"

On the eleventh day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "I could never do that, what about graduation, they'll miss the prom, why do
you do this, look at what they're missing, how long will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E., do you give them
tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"

On the twelfth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "Can they go to college, I could never do that, what about graduation, they'll miss
the prom, why do you do this, look at what they're missing, how long will you homeschool, YOU ARE SO STRANGE, what about P.E., do you give
them tests, are they socialized, can you homeschool legally?"

On the thirteenth day of homeschool I thoughtfully replied: "They can go to college, yes you can do this, they can have graduation, we don't
like the prom, we do it `cuz we like it, they are missing nothing, we'll homeschool forever, WE ARE NOT STRANGE!, we give them P.E., and
we give them tests, they are socialized, AND WE HOMESCHOOL LEGALLY!

On the fourteenth day of homeschool my neighbor said to me, "How can I get started, why didn't you tell me, where do I buy curriculum, when
is the next conference, WILL PEOPLE THINK WE'RE STRANGE?, I think we can do this, if you will help us, we will join a sports team and we'll
homeschool legally."
Escaping the Homeschool Matrix
By Steve Walden

The room was brightly lit and cold. She was sitting at a table, across from an empty chair. She knew the questioning would begin any minute. The door opened and a man bearing a remarkable resemblance to Hugo Weaving walked in and sat down in the empty chair.

"Mrs. Anderson," he began, "we've been monitoring your homeschool. Apparently, you have been living two lives. In one life, you're Katherine A. Anderson, homeschooling mother and wife in a respectable community. You have a homeschool curriculum. You have a schoolroom. You volunteer . . . to help out with your homeschool support group. The other life, Mrs. Anderson, is lived in your pajamas. Your kids are unable to complete their assignments, and if you can get them bathed and dressed before your husband returns from work, you consider it a good day. One of these lives has a future, Mrs. Anderson. The other does not."
