Shia Muslims hold religious procession in Dearborn

Thousands of Shia Muslims walked through falling snow and freezing cold in Dearborn on Saturday for Arabeen, a holy day for their community.

Waving religious flags and chanting "We are with you, oh Hussain," the crowd commemorated the 7th Century killing in battle of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Islam's prophet. The 2-mile procession started at the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn and ended at Hemlock Park, where speakers delivered messages in support of Hussain. They also called for peace in the Middle East.

Dearborn Police estimated about 2,500 attended the parade, bigger than last year's rally. There were no incidents reported. The Dearborn procession took place as millions of people took part in similar ceremonies in Iraq.

Muharram 1433 Appeal
The Muharram Appeal by NASIMCO in partnership with The World Federation this year was to help fund Alims for the new Islamic Centers rebuilt in Pakistan after the floods there. Alims are desperately needed to provide religious guidance in the villages and places where these Centers were rebuilt. Unfortunately, NASIMCO did not receive a good response towards this appeal. The following summarizes the donations made towards the cause.

Anjuman-e-Asghari, Minnesota - $580.00
Islamic Shia Ithna-Asheri Association, Edmonton - $100.00
NASIMCO - $6187.10

LDP Minnesota 2011
The 6th NASIMCO / WF Leadership Development Program (LDP) was co-hosted by Anjuman-e-Asghari and Imam Hussain Islamic Center in Minnesota on the weekend of November 18th, 2011.
ldp mn
The goal of the program is to "Unlock your Potential to Serve your Community and Humanity". The primary aim of the program is to develop leadership capacity within the community. The program provided a safe and supportive environment for the participants to explore and become aware of their current state in their leadership journey. Participants underwent various processes to experience the learning in different ways which equipped them with tools to enhance and evolve their leadership skills. Many participants had moments of enlightenment and a new drive to experience life to the fullest.

A participant described the LDP with the following words: "It's more than leadership - its exploring oneself, getting in touch with various ways of improving in all aspects of life."

CSAA Testimonial

Every year, NASIMCO collects donations that go towards supporting students who excel in Community Service and Academic Achievement by awarding them with scholarships. A past recipient of the scholarship had the following to say about receiving the scholarship:

"As a second year student at the University of Toronto, the CSAA scholarship I received was extremely beneficial. With increasing University costs, I was grateful to receive this bursary to ease financial pressure. The money I received will be put towards my tuition fees and academic textbooks. I consider myself blessed to be part of this community and will continue to volunteer and give back to the community that brought me to where I am today. I would like to thank the donors of the Marhum Abbas Alloo Scholarship for assisting me in my goal to graduate from university with a degree in Business Administration. May Allah (SWT) bless them and their Marhumeen for their generosity."

If you would like to donate towards a scholarship in the name of your Marhumeen, please contact NASIMCO Secretariat.

Canadian Association of Muslims with Disabilities
The Canadian Association of Muslims with Disabilities Task Force on Residential Services is seeking Muslim families of individuals with intellectual disabilities living in Ontario
(Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Developmental Delay, etc...) to participate in an important questionnaire to help identify the future needs of the community and design a framework for residential services.

When caregivers pass away, individuals with intellectual disabilities and other family members are faced with a crisis:

Who will take care of the individual?

        Who will she/he live with?

Which organization would best meet the family's cultural and faith based needs?

To complete the questionnaire and/or for more information, please contact CAM-D by e-mail: or vsit their website.
