I am just starting day three of a fantastic judging experience in Niagara, Ontario for the InterVin International Wine Awards with some outstanding palates. Sommeliers, media and winemakers are sequestered at White Oaks Resort in Niagara (harsh I know) tasting through 700+ wines in order to make your life easier.
After just over four years there, I left Toronto in November of 2003 (and similar to my return to BC), I was shocked at how far this region has come when I arrived earlier this week. I'm even more impressed at their push to create distinct appellations, something we in BC should be fighting harder for.

In this newsletter I continue on my journey through Oz, this time settling far too briefly in the lovely land of Clare Valley. You can also read more on Clare and the cooler regions that excited me so much in the current issue of Vines Magazine called Cool Down Under.

And finally, in September we celebrate the wines of Argentina. The region that will share center stage at the 2010 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival is the feature region at BC Liquor Stores, but there are also plenty of good bottles to be found in Private Wine Stores and across Canada. The quality is improving and you'll soon discover that Argentina is Malbec and more...

Watch for some great tastings this month in Vancouver: Sonoma in the City September 24 at the Vancouver Convention Center visit www.calwine.ca

 Clare Valley
 South Australia

Polish River Hill Clare Valley

Clare is a hidden gem in South Australia.
Just a bit farther than Barossa, and without the benefit of being anchored to Adelaide city it doesn't reap the same wine tourism traffic that Adelaide Hills or McLaren Vale do. Which is too bad because its a beautiful region with a very small town feel and plenty of treed sub-valleys which open up into broad plains. Clare is actually a plateau at the northern portion of the Mt. Lofty Ranges. Located about 140 km, almost straight-as-the-crow-flies, from Adelaide it receives the benefit of cool nights to elevate the brightness in its grapes as well as the hot days to ripen them. What you find here are multitude of varieties but Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet dominate - the terroir lends a distinct character that differs from lower altitude and warmer climate versions.

 Argentina
 Malbec...and more

Argentina Flag

Undeniably, Argentina is associated with producing the best Malbecs on the market, intense and inky with ripe fruit, dark floral, sweet spice notes and lush bodies. The Malbec vines are mature and the climate/terroir supplies perfect growing conditions for them - which is why they truly stand out. And although Mendoza isn't the only wine growing region in Argentina, 80% of the production does come from there. This region butts up along the Andes (and Chile) to the west and rests mid-country. I don't have to tell you how good (and what good value) the wines are - your dollars are speaking. Here are a variety of wines, some of which are available in private wine stores but check out BC Liquor Stores focus on the wines of Argentina throughout September.

Wine Reviews - Argentine wines here...

Clos De Los Siete, Mendoza Argentina, 2007

Clos de Siete

Blended by the talent of well-traveled international celebrity vintner Michel Rolland, the Clos de Los Siete combines one half Malbec with Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah. The nose is fresh mountain stream minerality, black currents and cherry aromas, sweet spices, smoke, espresso with hints of iodine. The palate is concentrated and smooth with plenty of spice, juicy dark fruit, tobacco and coffee. Powdery tannins cling to the palate and it has lovely, lifting acidity.
Elegant!

Luis Segundo Correas Las Acequias Malbec Oak, Mendoza Argentina, 2005

Las Asquias Luis Segundo

This is a powerful, extracted Malbec that is dense in colour with aromas of black berries and bittersweet chocolate, prunes and vanilla, sweet spice and plenty of pepper, crushed dried flowers and just a hint of sausage. The palate is potent, rich with chocolate and dark fruit, vanilla and clove flavours. It finishes powerfully, the tannins are supple, espresso and pepper linger on the finish.
Very impressive.

Masi Tupungato Paso Doble, Argentina, 2007

Paso Doble Masi

Paso Doble means two-step in Spanish - its also a very seductive, dramatic dance that emulates the movements of a bullfighter. From Italian producer Masi, comes this Paso Doble a blend of Corvina (also used in making Amarone) and Malbec from their Argentine estate.
The aromas are rich and dark, purple berry fruit, fruitcake and mocha, saddle leather and spice. The palate is supple, it has great acidity and powdery tannins, the flavours are intense; spicy and earthy with plenty of espresso and pepper lingering on the finish.

$15.99

More from Argentina...

 Norton 'LoTengo' Torrontes, Argentina 2007
 Value White

lo tengo

Okay - so the label is a bit campy, but if you like aromatic wines, good value and a quaffer to pair with spicy food - this is your wine.
Ripe melon and peach aromas - tropical hints - honey and lime zest with loads of floral notes. It's slick on the palate and flavours similar to Gewurztraminer - spices and rose flavours, lychee and peaches with citrus lingering through the finish.
Good value.

$13.99
