September is sadly, just around the corner and the calendar is filling up quickly.
I popped into VinCamp 2009 on August 8th to do a quick presentation with Sid Cross. It was fun, we discussed young vs. old wines at UBC, got off topic and ran overtime, but hey these things never go as expected and the planners did a fantastic job keeping us in line.

I took in my first event at Salt this week, Dunham Froese's Crystal and Kirby Froese poured wines and manager Kurtis Kolt led us through pairings with their specialty - cheese and charcuterie.
It's a fantastic venue, I suggest you check out their upcoming events.
I am off to Niagara in just over a week to judge at the Vines Magazine InterVin International Wine Awards, and speaking of Vines, the September/October Buyers Guide issue will be hitting the shelves right away. Look for my coverage of Australia's cool- climate regions and I examine the cult of the celebrity vintner.

Finally, I've taken you through New South Wales and McLaren Vale and now I'll finish up with Barossa and move onto Clare Valley...
Barossa Part 2 includes; Grant Burge, Jacob's Creek, Elderton, St Hallett and an evening with the boys from Glen Eldon, Burge Family Winemakers, Henschke, Langmeil, Murray Street & Thorn- Clarke...,

Cheers,
Daenna

 Far East in Italy
PoggioBello Friulano, Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC, Italy, 2007

Poggiobello friulano I'm pleased to see this new offering of Friulano from Italy's northeastern J shaped appellation of Colli Orientali del Friuli within the state of Friuli. Until the last couple of vintages you would recognize Friulano as Tocai Friulano, which is a name no longer in use.
Expect this to be an marvelous food wine, with amazing persistence and a plush texture. The aromas are honeycomb, apple and straw, some warm stone fruit notes and plenty of minerality. The palate is rich, the texture lanolin, mineral and honey/beeswax mingle with typical pithy citrus flavours. The finish is long and very bright. Pair with fish or creamy mushroom polenta.

$24.99

 A Naramata Bench Favourite
Poplar Grove Pinot Gris, Okanagan Valley BC, 2008

Poplar Grove PG 08 Poplar Grove's Pinot Gris has been a consistent BC favourite, but it has morphed over the years as winemaker Ian Sutherland has sought the perfect yeast cocktail. You may be convinced this wine has seen some oak contact but it's the yeast that gives it its additional supple texture and aromatics.
There are some apple pie and pear compote aromas, faint spice, honey and caramel notes. On the palate it is quite lush - rounded and creamy- the pear, caramel and fine spice return but crisp citrus flavours linger. Good concentration and a long warm finish this wine pairs well with extra aged nutty Gouda.

$22.+

 Fantastically Fragrant
Pentage Gewurztraminer, Okanagan Valley BC, 2008

Pentage Gew

Stunning aromatics that jump out of the glass!
Again Pentage has produced a fantastic Gew with fragrant honeysuckle, mango, lychee, exotic spices and rosewater with a pinch of white pepper. The palate tarts you up with pink grapefruit peel and warm spice, tropical citrus flavours linger on the finish. Rounded on the palate but not oily, excellent concentration and balance and bright acidity.

$18+

 One glass decanter?
 Centellino

Centellino

Many people believe that decanting any wine will make it taste better. I wouldn't disagree with that but I am also a big fan of having the bottle close by - call me crazy but its a visual thing. So, here is a handy little device that will aerate your wine one glass at a time right out of the bottle.
The Centellino is a delicate blown glass device made in Italy that attaches easily to your bottle. With a tilt you fill the reservoir, then with another tilt in the opposite direction the wine flows into your glass.

It looks impressive and unobtrusive but even more important is that it comes in measured pours. Perhaps it is something you'll soon see at your local wine bar.
The Centellino is sold by Gea WineWorks and comes in three sizes; 100 or 125ml for wine and a tiny 35ml for icewine, port or grappa.

 More than just Malbec
Michel Torino Don David Syrah Reserve, Argentina, 2007

Don David Syrah 07

Consistently good value, this is a knock-out Syrah with robust aromas of plums and blackberry, leather, chocolate and black pepper with a hint of banana. Fantastic acidity, loads of juicy blackberry and spice flavours throughout and mocha lingers. Good intensity and balance.

$15.99
