To welcome 2009, my 3rd annual Budget Bottles (part 1) is cutting costs and focusing on wines under $17. I feel I have to do my part to make sure you all keep drinking wine - perhaps more in-house than out, perhaps you'll spend a couple bucks less per bottle but make sure you just keep drinking it. This is a good time to experiment, try an affordable bottle from a country you haven't before (if anyone questions your selections tell them to mind their own budget).

In 2009s first edition newsletter, celebrating Wine Diva's 5th year, I am also featuring some of my November trip to Chile on WineScores.ca - see below for some introductions to the unique D.O's of Chile.

And, Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival tickets go on sale on January 27th! Jump in, don't hesitate as there are some great events and tastings including something I've been mulling over for a couple of years - A "women of wine" event that is cheekily named Diva(s) at the Met on March 24th.

I have gathered a group of women from around the world (including BC) who are in the grape trade - winemakers, proprietors, marketers...We'll taste, hear how these fabulous women got to where they are and then we'll shmooze, gab, eat and DRINK!
It's going to be a blast so make sure to get your tickets asap.

See you there!

Cheers,
Daenna

 (Re)Discovering Chile
 An Introduction...

LFE view

You can never really get lost in Chile, the magnificent Andes Mountains are always within view, and are always east. And, if you head west, into the sunset, you'll find yourself at the Pacific Ocean - in very little time.
So it's curious that while visiting a country with more than 4000 kilometers of coastline, it took me two weeks to find my way to the Pacific Ocean - especially when I was never more than 150 kilometers from it...

 Aconcagua & Maipo

Tarapaca statue Aconcagua is, for all intents and purposes, Errazuriz. That isn't saying that there are no other producers here, but it was Don Maximiano who pioneered the region in 1870 when most others were making wine in the Maipo...

The most densely packed, and the most recognizable of the DO Valleys is Maipo. Maipo attaches itself to Santiago on the east, drifting above and below the city while ebbing and flowing in a south-westerly direction toward the ocean. Here is where you truly begin to recognize the differences in terroir not just north and south, but east to west...
