 Cape Wine 2008
 reviews

cape wine fest banner

As far as large festivals go, Cape Wine is an extremely well designed show.
When you place hundreds of producers in a room - in this case the Cape Town Convention Center - and herd thousands more tasters through, the most important thing is layout. The venue was easy to maneuver, the glassware was plentiful and high quality and spit buckets were everywhere.
Every two years the Cape Wine Festival takes place in Cape Town alternating years with the Wines of South Africa Mega Tasting in London. In 2009 the Mega Tasting will take place October 13- 14th...

Nederburg VY banner

Like any other wine producing country in the world South Africa is made up of grape growing regions. In South Africa, these regions are divided up into districts and then again into smaller wards. The most recognized of the major regions being the Coastal Region - which includes in part; Swartland, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Cape Point and the tiny ward Constantia. The Coastal Region surrounds Cape Town, blanketing it to the east and north. Farther east are a several districts not part of a region - the cooler climate plateau of Elgin (Overberg) which I passed through quickly one day, the picturesque Hermanus in Walker Bay and the more southerly Cape Agulhas. In Hermanus we stopped to watch the Southern Right whales frolic in the bay...

KWV Roodeberg, Western Cape South Africa, 2005

Roodeberg Ripe blueberry and cherry aromas jump out of the glass followed with vanilla, chocolate and sweet oak spice notes. Smooth and easy-drinking with fresh berry fruits, cocoa, coffee, smoke and peppery spice flavours followed with supple tannins and plummy hints on the finish.
A Canadian favourite that is very tasty!

 Hot off my palate
some on-the-fly picks from recent tastings

Anvers Cabernet Anvers owner Wayne Keoghan brought his energy and enthusiasm from McLaren Vale to Vancouver last week as well as some of his solid, well-made wines - a combination of old- world elegance and new-world fruit. I recently reviewed his Langhorne Creek Cabernet 2004 (90 points) but I also really liked the Anvers 'Razorback Red' Adelaide Hills, 2004 a Shiraz~Cabernet blend with juicy cassis and mulberry aromas, allspice, mint, cocoa and sweet tobacco. Fresh, reigned-in fruit on the palate with more tobacco, mixed spices and finely ground white pepper. $24.95 BC

Burgundy fan?
Bouchard Pere et Fils. My 2006 red Burgundy picks from a comprehensive tasting held in Vancouver last week are the Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru with classically darker berry fruit and sweet cherry aromas, undergrowth/woodsy notes, cedar chips and fine spice box lingers. Smooth, sweet and addictive, softly rounded acidity with lingering berry fruit and spice.
Gasp - dare I say drinking quite fine right now...
And the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru made my mouth water - my first choice pick - it's an addictive wine with pretty violets, raspberry and blueberry tones, sweet spices with undertones of farmyard and saddle leather. Smooth, creamy berry fruit, medium-bodied with bright acidity and fine, drying tannins on the finish.

These wines will become available in spring 2009 - stay tuned.
