The return of summery weather helps me reminisce about June in Italy - especially the seaside region of Maremma.
In this issue I'll take you through Livorno and Grosetto tasting Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot, Vermentino and many other treats on WineScores.ca...

There is also a swack of new reviews linked to WineDiva.ca - from Australia to Portugal. There are two pages, so make sure to visit them both.

Meanwhile, I am on stage this weekend at EAT!Fraser Valley before flying off to the Cape Wine Festival 2008 where I'm looking forward to visiting some stunning wineries and tasting a lot of great South African wines - I'll share them with you when I return!

 Tuscany - Maremma
 Livorno & Grosetto

Bolgheri sign 500 banner

So what is the Maremma?
In Italiano - mare - of course tells you it's by the sea. But to be more a little more specific, (although it is an area that's hard to quantify) it's a roughly outlined area along the coast of south western Tuscany that primarily straddles the two provinces of Livorno and Grosetto. The most famed production zone in Maremma being Bolgheri (in Livorno) in the north but it also includes Suvreto (Livorno), Grosetto, Scansano (Grosetto) and then stretches southward into Lazio...

Paul Zinck Cremant Brut Rose d'Alsace, France, NV
 new reviews

Zinck brut rose

New!
A pretty blush-pink colour with streams of small bubbles and aromas of summer berries, lemon oil, caramel apples, vanilla and toast with a hint of orchard blossoms. The palate is clean, fresh and delightfully spritzy.
100% Pinot Noir - very enjoyable!

Firehose - Rebel Wine Company, California Riesling, 2007
 new!

Firehose Riesling

Very apropos - the Rebel Wine Co's Firehose was designed to put out the fire of spicy food.
A hint of sweetness balances sweet curries with spice. Lower alcohol doesn't light the fire like a high alcohol wine would and the price is a sweet bonus. Lime juice, honey blossoms, juicy orchard fruits and candied citrus rind aromas. Refreshing, an easy quaffer that's just off-dry with bright acidity and a slightly tart finish.

Beni di Batasiolo Barbera d'Alba DOC, Piedmont Italy, 2006

Batasiolo Barbera This is a producer that over-delivers.
The Barbera d'Alba (Barbera from the DOC of Alba) shows bright cherry fruit, sweet plummy notes, rich earth and violet aromas with a hint of blueberry, woodsmoke, iodine and espresso liqueur. The palate is medium-full bodied and smooth with a bright, prickly sensation, the flavours echo the aromas featuring loads of fresh berry fruit and cedar, the acidity is bright and the tannins firm.
Very tasty!

Salamandra Tempranillo, Castilla y Leon Spain, 2006

Salamandria tempranillo One hundred percent Tempranillo and just what you'd expect - cherry and black currents, cedar, leather and spice aromas with undertones of iodine, cedar and more tart red fruit notes. It's silky on the entry showing fresh red fruit, more cedar, licorice, spice and peppery flavours on the finish. A little dusty, a little chewy and very typical. Perfect for smoked meats or tapas - you'll appreciate it even more if you decant it or let it breathe a bit.
