& Germany part 2 - Rheinhessen, Nahe and the Pfalz

The first day of August is scary.
It means that the 'last' month of summer is upon us and that means the crazy days of fall are a'comin'.
But nothing, not even fall scheduling can cool my ardor for Riesling. Each time I open a great bottle of German Riesling I think - damn why don't we drink this more often? Delicious, elegant, low alcohol, fresh, a layered trifle of flavours.
I wish all the wines I review in this weeks newsletter were available here. But I have the taste of them embedded into my memory palate.
For the stories and reviews from Rheinhessen; Gunderloch, Heyl zu Herrnsheim and St. Antony, from the Pfalz; Bassermann~Jordan, Lingenfelder & Lucashof and from Nahe; Schlossgut Diel & Kruger~Rumpf. Some of the best producers in Germany.
And great news for those of you in Toronto - The Tasting Room with Terry David Mulligan has been picked up on the "Best of the Best" am740. Listen Saturday mornings 7-8am. This week Wine Diva reviews a few BC wines (also available in Ontario) as well as a few international options.
And next week, August 9th The Tasting Room will also be launching in Edmonton!

 Germany part 2
 Rheinhessen, Nahe & the Pfalz...

BJ bottles 350h For most Riesling lovers Germany is unarguably the king. Germans will tell you that not only do they have the best mineral soil for growing Riesling but that the best latitude for cultivating Riesling is 48-51 degrees latitude...the same as Winnipeg.
In part one I took you to the Rheingau. In part two I'll introduce you to the regions of Rheinhessen, the Pfalz and Nahe. And, if you just happen to be looking at a map of German wine regions you'll notice that together the three form the shape of a comma. Nahe sits at the head of the comma, Rheinhessen is the hook and Pfalz is the tail...
