 Drinking Italy - part 1
 & some new BC reviews

Sign up For My Free Newsletter (email address)

This week I have a rather lengthy article on Northern Italy - Friuli, the Veneto, Lombardy, Trentino and Piedmont....
But don't worry its brimming with photos and loads of wine suggestions that are available in Canada.

It's the long weekend and the sun finally on our side - yipeee!
That deserves some new reviews on BC wines. This is just a drop in the bucket of course and there will be more coming along this month and then throughout the summer. Check in daily on WineDiva.ca and on WineScores.ca - don't forget I post new reviews each day.

New reviews coming...
More new reviews from Argentina and Australia coming every day on both sites...

And, on The Tasting Room Radio this week Terry and I talk about the upcoming EAT!Vancouver show, boutique wineries from Australia, a quick touch on last weeks German wine tasting and New Westminster's - Pacific Breeze Winery.

Well, don't just sit there, dive in!

 Drinking Italy
 part 1 - the north

Vinitaly Friuli Pavillion

They walk a little slow, they drive a little fast, they arrive a little late but oh dio mio they make good wine.
Si-si, the Italians...

What do I appreciate the most about Italy?
The simple culture of wine.
We carry the weight of virtual hysteria when it comes to wine in our own culture -- are we ordering the right one, will our guests think we have no taste...

Schiopetto Tocai Friulano Collio, Friuli Italy, 2006

Schiopetto Tocai 2006 was an unusual vintage in Friuli, a hot vintage, producing wines of substantial alcohol levels - this one included at 14.5%. Golden-hued with clean terroir-driven minerality, apricots, lemon zest, orange rind and fresh floral notes. On the palate its bold flavours echo the aromas, it has an oily texture and substantial weight with warm spice on the finish.
A substantial white that would pair well with a rich, creamy polenta.

Livon Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Colli Orientali del Friuli, 2002

Livon Refosco A lovely Refosco showing wonderful rustic aromas - saddle leather, dark cherries, peppery spice, raisins, violets and coffee grounds notes. Medium-bodied and smooth in the mouth with flavours that echo the aromas - cherries, leather and oak spices - the finish is slightly dusty.
Pairs well with Taleggio cheese.

Hillside Estate Gewurztraminer, Okanagan BC, 2007

Hillside Gew 2007 The world would be a better place if there was more Gew. I would drink this all summer, affectionately gazing at its copper-hued glints and sniffing the juicy lychee, honeysuckle, pomelo zest and grapefruity aromas. On the palate it is clean, and fresh with bright flavours of; turkish delight, lychee, exotic citrus and warm spice.
Very good!

Joie 'A Noble Blend' Okanagan BC, 2007

Joie Noble 2007 an aromatic formulation of Gewurztraminer, Kerner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Ehrenfelser with loads of pink grapefruit, rosewater, white peaches and exotic spice aromas. It's just off-dry, with mouth-watering acidity showing tangerine zest, anise, ginger and more pink grapefruit on the finish.
Delicious!

QG Reserve PN 2006 Elegant and feminine the 'Family Reserve' Pinot show loads of bright fruit - black berries, bing cherry and raspberry - minerals and fresh floral aromas. Silky and quite delicate featuring berry/cherry flavours, leather and cedary hints with fresh acidity and fine tannins.

Golden Mile Cellars Zinfandel, Okanagan BC, 2006

Golden Mile Zin 2006 A second round of this tasty Zinfandel is being released in the next couple of weeks. I missed tasting it on the first release last fall but the time in bottle certainly hasn't hurt. Coloured an inky ruby-purple the aromas feature glorious mixed briary berries - smoke, chocolate covered blueberries, sage and plummy undertones. On the palate it has ripe, creamy fruit then continues into cherries, tobacco and spice flavours with balanced acidity and supple tannins.
