 Judging wines at Vinitaly &
 blending it up

Things are heating up these days - and I'm not just talking about the weather. It's a busy time for wine - new spring releases from BC, new products arriving on the wine shelves and agent wine portfolios changing faster than a skinny couture model in Milano.
After spending two weeks in the stunning city of Verona practicing my spitting techniques and making my dentist cringe, I returned with loads of new wine reviews (which will start appearing immediately) and a desperate thirst for drinking spritz(see below).
Speaking of heating up - those of you who know me will be surprised at my new appreciation for fine grappa - the perfect sleep aid.
And, on the airwaves - congratulations to my friend Terry David Mulligan and his radio show The Tasting Room which has been picked up by CFUN (er The Buzz) 1410 and will air Saturday's from 5- 7pm as well as its current time and station in the Okanagan.
This Saturday, during my regular segment we'll briefly talk about Vinitaly, the Naramata Bench tasting in Vancouver (with my cold) as well as Rodney Strong wines and winemaker Rick Sayre's visit this week.
And finally, on Tuesday morning I'll be back on BT on City TV to talk 'summer sippers'.

 Judging wines at Vinitaly

Vinitaly judging

The judges were a mixture of oenologists and journalists from all over the world. The journalists represented newspapers, magazines and websites from Russia, China, Romania, India, Norway, Sweden, Korea, Vietnam, USA, Canada, Australia, Estonia, Bulgaria, Mexico, Brazil, Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Slovakia, Spain, Taiwan, Portugal and Israel....

...and much to the glee of the Italians - there were 20 women involved - primarily journalists.

 What is "spritz'?

Sprizz This is a spritz (or sprizz).
A brilliant concoction (or blend) of Prosecco, Aperol and soda with a slice of orange. Consumed en masse at cafes, wine bars and restaurants in Veneto where it was born in 1919. Recently aquired by Campari (Spritz with Campari isn't nearly as good- trust me) I am praying Aperol will soon be available worldwide - especially here in Vancouver.
Refreshing and low alcohol it puts the sunny orange in your day.
