Feature story -
What is a Trigger Point?
A trigger point is not the same as an Acupuncture point. When you touch a trigger point there is pain and you can feel where the spot is with your fingers. These areas are often found in "muscle knots". Trigger points usually have blocked blood flow and often cause an entire muscle to be painful, tight, weak, and more easily fatigued. Trigger points can be caused by overworking or over stressing muscles or by a direct injury to the muscle.
Characteristics of Trigger Points:
- Tender to finger pressure.
- Deep aching pain in the affected muscle.
- Overlying skin feels hot.
- Weakness in affected muscle.
Relief for trigger point pain can easily be achieved by releasing the 'knots' with Acupuncture treatments and Massage, which remove the blockage of trapped energy, allowing an unwinding or relaxation of the muscle fibers. When combining Acupuncture treatments and Massage with Trigger Point Therapy, those affected will enjoy the benefits of quicker results and find that the healing effects tend to last longer.
Common conditions which can benefit from Trigger Point Therapy
- Tension Headaches
- Back Pain
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Fatigue
How does Trigger Point Therapy work?
Trigger Point Therapy works by applying direct pressure on the affected spot, allowing the pain and tension to slowly melt away. This creates a release in the muscle that can give you greater flexibility, a decrease in stiffness and increase in local blood flow. Trigger Point Therapy, when used in conjunction with Acupuncture treatments can enhance the noted improvement in pain relief.
The deactivation of trigger points with Acupuncture takes a course of treatment. The muscles associated with trigger points have often been dysfunctional for many months, or even years, so the re-education of the nervous system takes time. You can receive faster results by including Trigger Point Therapy as part of your overall treatment plan.
Clients who have attended this workshop, and then who have practiced the Trigger Point Therapy have found they can respond to Acupuncture treatments faster, get better results and in turn, save money!
