Cascade Acupuncture Center wins Columbia Gorge Region Small Business of the Year Award for 2010
The Small Business Development Center at Columbia Gorge Community College has selected Carola Stepper and the team at Cascade Acupuncture Center as the Columbia Gorge Region Small Business of the Year award recipient for 2010.
This award, which required an extensive application process and five letters of recommendation, is based upon several factors, including general business growth, innovation and contribution to community oriented projects.
Stepper and Cascade Acupuncture Center were also honored with this award in 2007.
"I applaud Carola in her efforts as an employer, an entrepreneur, and a health educator. She continues to look to the future with wide aspirations that are not only achievable, but are inspiring to others in our community." - Mary J. Merrill, Director, SBDC Columbia Gorge Community College.
Because of Stepper's business excellence she and the Cascade Acupuncture Center team were also nominated for the statewide Small Business Administration (SBA) Oregon Business of the Year award for both 2007 and 2010. "Our team and I are honored to receive this award. I couldn't have done it without everybody's dedication to exceptional Acupuncture care and great customer service. At Cascade Acupuncture Center our purpose is to help the people of the Columbia Gorge Region to get well naturally. Our clinics focus on the treatment of pain, as well as many other health concerns, which are mostly stress related. We also want to thank our wonderful clients; we couldn't have done it without their dedication and referrals!" stated Stepper.
Cascade Acupuncture Center was founded in 2005 by Stepper, a registered nurse at the time and licensed Acupuncturist. Cascade Acupuncture Center has grown from a single clinic in Hood River with one Acupuncture associate and an office manager to an additional clinic in The Dalles with six employees; Acupuncturists Deborah Kinnes, LAc and Nikol Clark, LAc, operations manager, Lisa Shirk, office manager, Jackie Powell, marketing director, Susan Vallie and office assistant, Amy Rowland. In December of 2010 Stepper purchased a clinic building in The Dalles to further control her business investments and costs. The new clinic building is located in a neighborhood with many medical clinics and offers off street parking with easy access for clients.
When initially opening her first clinic in Hood River, Stepper had no formal business operations training and is now efficiently operating two completely functional and successful clinics as well as teaching a seven hour business class to Acupuncturists and other health care professionals, passing on what she has learned.
"The financial part of owning a business was intimidating to me at first. With the assistance I have received from Mary Merrill at the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC), I now feel comfortable being the CFO of the clinics and holding the monthly financial meetings at the SBDC to review my business finances have been invaluable. I recommend consulting with the SBDC to any local small business owner, these meetings are free of charge because they are funded by the CGCC, the State of Oregon Business Development Center and the SBA", said Stepper.
In addition to creating two fully functional Acupuncture clinics and an extensive Chinese Herbal Pharmacy, during the previous four years, Cascade Acupuncture has managed to create a business that has shown an increase in net profits of more than 30% during very challenging economic times. Stepper not only endeavors to be an exemplary Acupuncturist, but businesswoman and employer too; Her six employees receive paid vacation, holiday pay, matching retirement savings, health insurance, bonuses and raises.
Cascade Acupuncture Center is a general Acupuncture practice with a focus on pain management who employs a unique and effective treatment style that involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles only below the elbows and knees. This style of treatment has proven to be highly effective in many areas of prevention and pain management.

Your CAC Staff: Deborah, Nikol, Jacki, Lisa and Carola
