August 19-21, 2009

"Green Communities are Clean Communities, Healthy Communities"

PLEASE NOTE:  The Shreveport Hilton is guaranteeing reservations at the special conference rate through Monday, July 27, 2009. Call 1-800-HILTONS and mention the KLB group code to ensure the guaranteed conference block rate.

The 2009 conference focuses on "green living" and its impact on community development, as well as local initiatives in litter law enforcement, community building and sustainability of community anti-litter programs.

Speakers include Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Vice President Maitreyi Roy discussing greening work and its effect on community development; Tom Martin, president of Zehnder Communications, with tips for gaining awareness through social networking mediums such as Facebook and YouTube; and Louisiana KLB affiliates in communities large and small sharing successful programs they have created.

On Wednesday afternoon, August 19, several pre-conference workshops will be offered. Keep America Beautiful's Sue Smith and Cecile Carson will hold a training session for teaching KAB's award-winning 'Waste in Place' curriculum in schools.  Another workshop on board development will be conducted by Kay Irby, Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations.  The workshops are free to conference registrants but you must register to attend.  Contact Melanie Peck at melanie-peck_klb@cox.net to register.

The main conference begins Thursday, August 20 at 8:00 a.m. and concludes on Friday, August 21 following the KLB Awards Luncheon.

Other education session topics will cover updates on recent statewide and national initiatives, with a strong focus on enforcement of state litter laws, clean water issues and the current social media movement.

The conference concludes with Secretary of State Jay Dardenne as keynote speaker at the annual Keep Louisiana Beautiful awards luncheon.  Always interesting and entertaining, Dardenne titles his presentation "Louisiana's Trashy Politics - We're Picking Up!"  DEQ and KLB will also present the 2008 KLB awards that recognize exemplary programs and individuals promoting and strengthening cleaner communities.

General registration for the conference is $110 on or before August 3, $125 after August 3 and $140 on site. Click here to register.
