HILLEL is proud to offer a
variety of programming and resources to help Jewish students from all over the Twin Cities explore and
celebrate their Jewish identity. In the spirit of 'going greener' we
bring you our on-line version of our annual newsletter. This has
been an incredible year for Hillel, as programming remains vibrant and has
drawn record numbers of Jewish students consistently, all year, from
our opening BBQ with over 200 students, to regular Shabbat attendance climbing
to between 60 - 100 students, and everything in between. You
can check out our year in pictures to
get a taste of Hillel's exciting program offerings. By all
accounts, the number of Jewish students at the U of M is growing, and Hillel
wants to be there for them. Like most
non-profits, Hillel is facing financial challenges. We have chosen to respond
as creatively as possible to double digit allocation decreases for the second
year in a row from major funding sources. We have reconfigured staff, which has also allowed us to help students
gain valuable work experience, and economized on other fixed costs as much as
we can in order to operate within our means yet still maintain attractive
programs and activities for the students. However, for an
institution like Hillel, cost-cutting only goes so far before the central
mission of the organization is impacted. All of this
means that we have to rely more and more on our own sources of
support. Please take a few minutes to see the wonderful programming we
have offered our students this year, (visit www.ujews.com/adar to see the multiple offerings during Jewish Culture Month, which expanded this year from a week to a full month's worth of amazing programs!) and then read the words of our students to
learn the impact that Hillel has had on their lives and how we are helping to
shape the Jewish future, one person at a time. Since 60% of students
at the U stay in Minnesota, your support of Hillel is one way to ensure a
strong Jewish future for our community. Thank you
for your continued and on-going support - and if you haven't supported Hillel
in the past, there's no time like the present! Please let us hear from
you. Your feedback is always welcome. Enjoy a restful and
relaxing summer!

Semitic Idol V a HUGE Success!
There were no losers at
Semitic Idol V (Hillel's annual cantor's concert and fundraiser) on
April 29... only one big winner - HILLEL! Cantors Audrey Abrams, Sarah
Lipsett-Allison and Scott Buckner squared off to a crowd of almost 200
in American Idol style. New this year was a special student competition
held on-line in the weeks leading up to the concert. Recent graduate,
Deb Carneol won the competition and the opportunity to perform at the
concert! Judges John & Debbie Orenstein, Jerry Siegel and Jeff
Zuckerman provided comedic relief and the evening ended with a special
performance by student jazz combo Two Fifths Minus One. Special thanks
to Emcee, Jon Stone, and everyone who supported this event in any way,
thus, ensuring a thriving Hillel for years to come. If you are
interested in serving on a committee to plan Semitic Idol VI, contact
Sarah Routman at sroutman@umn.edu. Visit
www.semiticidol.comto listen to our student competitors and get excited for next year's
concert already!

LIFE Goes On...
Once just a dream of Hillel Executive Director Sarah Routman, and community members Marcia Cohodes and Jerry Ingber, Hillel LIFE is now a successful reality.
This leadership initiative, funded by the graduates of the Minneapolis Wexner Heritage program aims to engage Jewish student leaders in study, create a bond among students and build a connection with the Twin Cities Jewish Community as students are exposed to and become aware of the vast resources available to them. By creating a program true to the Wexner vision, the hope is also to increase the visibility of Hillel in the community.

Hillel Testimonials
Storytelling is essential to the Jewish
tradition. It is why we read the weekly Torah portion and why holidays
such as Passover, where we retell the story of the Exodus from Egypt
each year, continue to endure.

BLU Crew
From Danny Uhlemann, rising senior:
"I decided to help create this initiative because I did not consciously
walk into Hillel my freshman year. I walked past it, but never bothered
to stop in. Rarely will students go out of their way to get involved
with something they may be unsure of. This is why the BLU Crew needs to exist. We are
the thread that connects the students who do not consciously come to
Hillel..."
