Hillel celebrated Tu B'shvat with a sustainability Shabbat, where we
announced the award from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization of a grant for a Rain Garden, which will be installed this
spring. As we continue to get greener, we are opting to use email rather than the more traditional paper newsletter to keep you in the know. Enjoy!

Hillel:UMN Together We Can Pull It Off!
Hillel is excited to announce a new community service
initiative! With the support of the Ronald McDonald House, Hillel
has partnered with Sanford Hall (a student residence hall on campus) in an
effort to raise awareness and funds for the RMH of the Twin Cities through
their Pop Tab drive. The drive is in conjunction with Hillel's Jewish month of
Adar celebration: February 15 - March 12. During Adar, joyful behavior and giving
back to the community are encouraged, as the Jews were saved by Esther and
escaped death!
As you think about where to give back to the community in honor of Adar, we
hope you will consider Hillel at the University
of Minnesota. A gift of any
amount shows you support Jewish continuity in a young person's life.
Happy Adar and Happy Purim!
Look for
PASSOVER INFORMATION coming your way soon!

ADAR! What a Balagan!*
* a big to do, a chaos, a happy mess.
The middle of February has never been so much fun! Hillel kicked off the Jewish, happy month of Adar on February 16 by giving away homemade matzo ball soup in ceramic mugs to over 300 people in front of Coffman Memorial Union.
Adar is the happiest month of the Hebrew calendar. This excitement is due to Purim! Because of the joy and fun that is central to the month, students decided to hold their annual Jewish Culture Month during Adar. The month, which features more than 12 events, aims to teach the non-Jewish population at the U of M a little bit about Jewish Culture. We even have a special website, just for the occasion-check out ujews.com/adar to learn more about the events and other fun games and contests afoot!

Israel Study Abroad Approved for U!
For many years, University of Minnesota students were required to seek special permission to study in Israel. However, all that is now history as University of Minnesota students can now apply to study abroad at Hebrew University in Jerusalem or Haifa University in Haifa.
The Learning Abroad Center will be offering programs beginning in Fall 2010. The Institute of Technology will also be hosting a three-week faculty-led summer session for students in May.
Hillel was very excited to work with the Learning Abroad Center to host an Israel study abroad info session on February 24.
Upon hearing the news that study abroad in Israel was approved, many Jewish students screamed with excitement, some even cried with joy. They all agreed that the University of Minnesota has moved in a positive direction with this approval and they are excited for the Jewish and non-Jewish students that will get to experience Israel in an academic setting in the future.

Birthright a Success!
20 Hillel students from the University
of Minnesota, St. Thomas University,
Rassmussen College, and Minneapolis Technical and Community College accompanied
Executive Director Sarah Routman on a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip that they
will never forget!
The group traveled with other Hillel students from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
and Oklahoma University and spent 10 days touring the
country.
Students from our Partnership 2000 region (the Sovev Kinnert
area) joined us for part of the trip and we were able to do volunteer projects
in the region. Major highlights included the meaningful Hebrew naming ceremony
and celebrating with the students who chose to become B'nai Mitzvah'd. Students
were challenged to understand their place as Jews in today's world and discover
their personal connection to Israel
while strengthening their Jewish identities. All agreed that it was a life
changing experience!
