Keep
the light of Hillel burning brightly!
As we
celebrate Hanukkah and 2009 comes to a close, many worthwhile organizations
will be reaching out to you and asking for your support as you consider
end-of-the-year gifts. We hope you'll consider Hillel at the University of Minnesota, and help us continue the
important work of engaging Jewish students at this critical time in their
development. A gift of any amount sends a clear message that you support Jewish
continuity at this critical time in the life of a young adult. Deb Carneol, a senior majoring
in public relations, has expressed it nicely in her letter that follows. All of us at Hillel wish you a Happy Hanukkah
and appreciate your support for all that we do.

YOU make it happen at Hillel!
Throughout my college career, the Hillel community has been
my family away from home. I always get
homesick around the Jewish holidays because that is when my entire family gets
together to celebrate. Hillel has been
here every year to fill that void.
Hillel has provided nightly candle lighting opportunities for my friends
and me to light the Hannukiah together.
And Hanukkah wouldn't be the same without lots of latkes! I have savored delicious latkes three
different times this holiday because of Hillel's exciting Hannukah events (Rock the Dreidel, Latke
Lunch, and Greek Shabbat). Hillel even provided me with my own
Hannukiah and candles so that I could share the Hanukkah warmth together with
my friends. This time of year would be
super hard for me if I did not get to celebrate Hanukkah with my family and
friends at Hillel, and your donations have
made it possible for Hillel to provide all of these opportunities. It is
so meaningful to students to have a variety of programs and experiences that
help create a sense of their Jewish home.
Thank you so much for your donations and keep them coming, so that
Hillel will be here for others to enjoy who will come after me!

Relations

Hillel Highlights
Hillel "Rocked the Dreidel" with over 130
students at Downtime Bar & Grill in Dinkytown. Students gathered with friends and enjoyed
live music by the local band Absolute GrĂ¼v. As they listened to the story of
Hannukah, they ate latkes and jelly donuts. During this holiday of
rededication, students collected over $100 and more than 300 non-perishable
food items which have been donated to STEP (St. Louis Park Emergency Program).
As students left, they were able to pick up Hannukah care packages complete
with a Hannukiah, candles, dreidels, and gelt. During the holiday,
students gathered each evening at Hillel to light candles together as a community.
On December 11, Hillel students gathered for the second
annual Greek themed Shabbat. This meaningful
Shabbat experience broadened the Greek Jewish Community on campus by giving
students the opportunity to celebrate together, lead services, and welcome
fellow Fraternity and Sorority members not familiar with Hillel. Members of
Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Sigma Alpha Mu not only sponsored this
special Shabbat, but helped prepare a delicious Greek Friday night dinner,
enjoyed by all.
The snow couldn't stop em! U of M students and faculty
braved a snowstorm for Hillel's Latke Lunch!
This longstanding tradition brought in more than 80 people to enjoy piping hot
latkes, play driedel, relax and read up on Hanukkah fun facts! Making this year's event extra special were Jaime Martinez, lifetime Board member and a
long-time latke maker, and Angie Gasak, Hillel's new Community Health student
intern. Students were on hand to help
peel potatoes, set up Hanukkah decorations and add their smiles to make it a
memorable Hanukkah celebration for all!
