Hillel's an nual Milgrom Shabbat event is around the corner
and you are invited! Please join us for this special event on November 6. The
evening will begin with a student led Shabbat service, an U of M alumni giving
our D'Var Torah, and an amazing dinner and after dinner conversation with
Ernest Adams, author of "From Ghetto to Ghetto". Adams
will be speaking about his experiences growing up in the urban ghetto in the
Jim Crow era, and his coming of age during law school during the Black Power
movement leading in to his eventual conversion to Judaism. This event is
sponsored annually by the Rabbi Louis and Esther Milgrom Shabbat Programming
fund. Rabbi Louis Milgrom was Executive Director of Hillel for over a period of over
30 years. The fund which makes this event possible was established in 2004 in
honor of Rabbi Milgrom.

Hillel LIFE Recognizing the need to fill a void at Hillel, several
alumni of the Wexner Heritage Foundation and Executive Director Sarah Routman
have created Hillel LIFE. Hillel LIFE is an engaging program that through
several sessions explores Jewish Identity, Networking, our connection to Israel,
Public Speaking, and Inclusion. Hillel LIFE will feature Jewish stories from
community leaders. This program has already had a
huge impact on the student participants and the community leaders as well
and
is helping to create a new community that is bringing our Jewish leaders and
students together
on this large University
of Minnesota
campus.

There's So Much to Celebrate!
Student Spotlight: Samantha Bass, immediate past president of Hillel, is one
of only 25 students chosen from across North
and South America to be named Legacy
Heritage CAMERA Campus Fellows Representative on the University of Minnesota
campus for the 2009-2010 academic school year. Sam will run 3 Israel-related
programs aimed at promoting a better understanding of Israel.
She has already had an op-ed piece published in The Minnesota Daily, and will help other students learn how
to counter bias on campus through programs that encourage factual, fair
coverage in campus publications.
Hillel Highlights: Welcome Week brought over 200 new students to
Hillel who made fleece blankets and filled birthday bags for the
needy. Hillel introduced Laughter Yoga at the Refresh Yourself Fair,
attended by over 5,000 students, promoting Hillel's regular
laughter sessions as one way to reduce some of the stresses of college
life. Student Board members were on hand at the fair to promote
Hillel's SoupforU initiative that provides a little touch of
home to sick students throughout the campus. (Click for more info.)Nearly 200 students ~ a record number ~ explored

About Us
We at Hillel are dedicated to helping Jewish
students create a positive sense of Jewish identity
on their own terms. In addition to this, we serve
as a community resource for Jewish cultural and
educational programming to students of all faith backgrounds. We also enjoy long walks
on the beach and hamentashen, but not the poppyseed
ones.
