Happy B-Day Hillel!
UofM Students to Throw Party for Hillel
On June 14, 2009 Hillel supporters from all over the world will come together to wish Hillel a "Happy 85th Birthday!" For University of Minnesota Hillel students, the 85th Birthday Party is a chance to raise awareness of Hillel's vast program offerings and to raise money needed for the U's Hillel.
Students plan to host parties over the summer wherever they are. So far, their ideas range from holding a summer barbecue in Alaska to a cake and ice cream social in Illinois. Students also see the parties as a way to give back to the community by adding a community service element. But the birthday bonanza is not just for students! Many alumni are getting involved by holding parties with their college buddies and relishing the good times they had at Hillel when they were in college.
For help or more information on how to plan a birthday party for Hillel, please contact Sarah Routman at 612-379-4026.Check out www.hillel.org/85blog for updated information from all over the country about Hillel celebrations, and be sure to upload your own photos to join in the fun!

Hillel Launches New Program: Hillel LIFE (Leadership Initiative for Excellence)
This UofM Hillel program of learning and leadership will honor Les & Abigail Wexner. In 1985, Leslie Wexner established the Wexner Heritage Foundation to underwrite a two year fellowship program for a select group of Jewish adults in major U.S. cities and Canada. Recognizing the need to also reach out to university students to build a Jewish community during these critical years, Leslie and Abigail Wexner have emerged as staunch supporters of Hillel. In honor of these efforts Hillel International Board of Governors Chairman Edgar M. Bronfman presented Leslie Wexner with its prestigious Renaissance Award last spring.

Be the Change
From Outgoing Student Board President Samantha Bass
Dear Friends of Hillel, Shalom! My name is Samantha Bass, and I am the outgoing president of the Hillel Student Board. I am a junior majoring in history and triple minoring in Spanish, English, and Jewish Studies. While I often take pride in my Jewish identity on campus, so many college students, both Jewish and non-Jewish, struggle to find their identities. Enter Hillel.

Hillel, Telling Our Stories
Storytelling is essential to the Jewish tradition. It is why we read the weekly Torah portion and why holidays such as Passover, where we retell the story of the Exodus from Egypt each year, continue to endure.
"Thank you for making Hillel such a great place to work and hang out. I have thoroughly enjoyed working here even when things get a bit hectic!" - Lauren Gillman, student intern, 2008

Giving Back
UofM Hillel Students Repair the World
Tikkun olam, Repairing the World, and Tzedek, Justice - these are fundamental Jewish values. By focusing on different service projects, Hillel students have the opportunity to give back to their community and to make the world a better place. Especially with the current economic situation and the many hardships we see, we have decided to focus on how we can help others.

Focus on Israel
Taglit-Birthright Israel Trip a Success
Tomorrow I'm leaving for Israel. I must admit that I have a love for traveling, seeing new things and experiencing the world and different cultures. However, I wouldn't say that I ever thought I would visit Israel during a time like this, let alone have this be my Taglit-Birthright Israel experience. But after a lot of thinking... this is as good a time as ever for me, personally, to go to Israel.

Shabbat: Lots of Ways to Celebrate
Candles. Grape juice. Challah. Dinner. Shabbat Services. D'var Torah. At the University of Minnesota Hillel, in addition to the ordinary Shabbat experience, Hillel is bringing a whole lot more to the table. Mexican, Chinese, and Russian Shabbatot have featured special foods, special prayers and traditions from around the globe. Kickball and Kugel, and Alternative Love Shabbat offered students a more casual setting on Friday nights when the typical student-led services and dinner are not offered. Giving students the chance to gather in the spirit of Shabbat, has made these evenings special and offered students who otherwise don't feel connected, a sense of community.
