First  Day of School for Students is Thursday, Sept. 1

The Ohio Department of Education has approved the CH-UH City School District's request for professional waiver days at the end of August and school will begin Thursday, September 1, for all students. Teachers and all staff will take part in Professional Development programming from August 29-31.

CH-UH Voters to Decide 6.9 Mill School Levy Nov. 8

On Aug. 2, the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Board of Education voted to place a 6.9 mill operating levy on the Nov. 8 ballot. If the levy passes, homeowners will see a tax increase of $211 per year for every $100,000 in property valuation.

The district's Lay Finance Committee had recommended a 7.2-mill levy to the board July 5, based on Chief Financial Officer Scott Gainer's five-year forecast for the district. Gainer said the board could put a 6.9-mill levy on the ballot if the district cut $250,000 from the budget. After Superintendent Doug Heuer assured the board that $250,000 could be cut without impacting educational programming, the board decided to go with a 6.9-mill levy.

Gainer said more than $7 million in cuts would be needed if the levy does not pass, and the district would have to put a levy with "double-digit millage" on the ballot next year. The last operating levy passed in the district was 7.2 mills, in November 2007. When that levy was approved, the Lay Finance Committee said the new revenue collected would keep the district on a three-year levy cycle. But "aggressive budget reductions" and ongoing cost-savings measures have allowed that levy to last a fourth year, Gainer said.

Always a Good Time to Thank a Teacher!

Even in the summer, you can send a personalized note of gratitude to your favorite teacher. We know how wonderful our teachers are, so offering a note of appreciation is easy and goes a long way to encourage them in their work. Take a moment, brighten a teacher's summer day. Proceeds help support our School Team Grants program that promotes innovation and collaboration in our schools. Here's the link to our online Thank-A-Teacher form.

Upcoming Events in the Heights

Coming to Heights Arts Gallery: Found Contacts, Overlooked Selections from 20th Century American Photographic Studios, Sept. 9-Oct. 22

Found ContactsThis exhibition of contact sheets, Found Contacts, orbanized by Lisa Kurzner and drawn from the collection of Mark Schwartz, will be on exhibit at the Heights Arts Gallery, 2175 Lee Rd. in Cleveland Heights, from Sept. 9 to Oct. 6, with an opening reception Sept. 9. The contact sheet-now on the verge of extinction-captures the working life and thought processes of photographers by mapping out the sequence of shots on roll film-in the studio or on the street. Choice, timing and bracketing are terms identified with proof sheets that record the unfolding relationships between the photographer and his subject. The unedited visual manuscript, marginalia included, contains the diamonds as well as dross of that unique experience-the shoot.
